A Yorktown Heights family received a memorial plaque over the weekend honoring Timothy J. Stewart, a retired New York City police detective and 9/11 first responder whose life was dedicated to service.

The plaque presentation on Campbell Court was organized through the Til Valhalla Project, a veteran-owned volunteer organization that provides memorial plaques to fallen members of the uniformed services and honors their legacies.

Sgt. Mark G. Siliato, a retired New York City Police Department Highway Patrol officer, 30-year Mahopac resident and volunteer with the organization, presented the plaque to Stewart’s family. Members of the Yorktown Police Department, including Lt. Matthew Racioppo, Sgt. Michael Tillistrand and Police Officer Guillermo Lizarzaburu, along with Deputy Gregory Corvino of the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, were also present for the ceremony.

Stewart, born Feb. 25, 1969, died Jan. 30, 2023, at age 53, due to health complications.

A Yorktown Heights resident, Stewart served with the New York City Police Department before joining the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office as a special police officer. He retired from the NYPD as a detective second grade after a career in law enforcement.

Following the Sept. 11 attacks, Stewart volunteered with the recovery bucket brigade at Fresh Kills in Staten Island on his days off, assisting with recovery efforts at the site.

Those who knew Stewart remembered him as a “gentle giant” who was always willing to help others. During his service with the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, he was stationed at the Putnam County Office Building, where he became known for greeting visitors with kindness and a warm smile.

Stewart was remembered as a welcoming presence who made a lasting impression on colleagues, friends and community members. His legacy of service continues through those who knew him and the family he leaves behind.

He is survived by his wife, Toni, and their son, Aiden.
