Recently retired Town of Yorktown Director of Planning John Tegeder received the President’s Award from the Westchester Municipal Planning Federation at its annual planning awards ceremony June 3.
Tegeder joined Yorktown as an assistant planner in 1997 after a career in architecture and later became planning director, serving under nine town supervisors from both political parties. Throughout his tenure, he emphasized collaboration and often credited his interest in history as a driving force behind his work.
Though retired, Tegeder is not stepping away from Yorktown entirely. He’s serving on the steering committee overseeing updates to Yorktown’s comprehensive plan, adopted in 2010.
Tegeder led a number of major projects, including streetscape improvements in Yorktown Heights and Jefferson Valley, the Shrub Oak Memorial Gazebo, Patriot Park and its evolution into Veterans Memorial Circle, and the restoration of Railroad Park and the Battle of Pines Bridge Monument. The monument project earned a federation planning achievement award in 2021.
Tegeder also served on the federation’s board for 12 years after joining in 2008. He chaired its annual awards committee and, with then-Assistant Planner Robyn Steinberg, helped create the organization’s website.
Reflecting on nearly three decades with the town, Tegeder told Yorktown News earlier this year that he hoped he left Yorktown better than he found it.
