SHRUB OAK, N.Y. — Yorktown officials will once again open a community pool ahead of the town's normal schedule on Wednesday to help residents stay cool as extreme heat affects the region.
After opening on Tuesday, the Brian J. Slavin Aquatic Facility at 3800 Sunnyside St. in Shrub Oak will again operate from noon to 7 p.m. The early openings depart from the usual schedule, in which the pool opens only on weekends until the school year ends.
The decision to open the pool comes as schools plan early dismissals due to the heat. Town officials said the goal is to provide a safe, supervised location for residents to cool off.
“With schools closing early on Tuesday due to the extreme heat, we wanted to ensure that our children have a safe, supervised place to cool down and enjoy themselves,” Supervisor Ed Lachterman said Monday in a press release from the town.
He added that “opening the pool early provides a valuable opportunity for families to beat the heat.”
Officials said Tuesday they were monitoring conditions and had raised the possibility of extending pool hours on Wednesday, June 25 as well.
Updates will be posted on the town’s official Facebook page, Instagram account and website.
Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses. Those without air conditioning are urged to visit one of Yorktown’s cooling centers. A list of those facilities can be found here.
