New playground opens at Blackberry Woods

Yorktown has opened a new playground at Blackberry Woods.

The new children’s play area, celebrated with a ribbon-cutting on Sept. 10, features a colorful jungle gym and a swing set. Town officials said the equipment sits on a soft surface designed to minimize injuries from falls.

“I’ve been very committed over my term to making sure that we have great facilities,” Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman said in a Sept. 11. press release. “We’ve been working on a lot of different projects, our pools, our parks. We know that we’re leaving our town for our kids.”

The town’s Recreation Commission approved the $50,000 playground renovation earlier this year, according to the release.

“This project is all about getting ready for this next generation of youngsters,” Parks Superintendent James Martorano, Jr. said. “The parents and children of this community came to our Recreation Commission meeting, where they pushed for this project. Without their support, I don’t think we would have been able to get to the finish line and be here today."

Blackberry Woods isn’t the only recent playground upgrade: Willow Pond’s playground on Curry St. also received a new safety-mulch ground surface.
