Monday, May 19, Granite Knolls Park
Top-seeded Yorktown, ranked No. 13 in the Class AA state poll, defeated 16-seed Saunders 24-3 in the opening round of the Section 1 Class AA tournament.

Alex Ornstein (2-2, 2 runs, RBI, walk), Brian White (2-3, 2 runs, 2 RBI, stolen base), Lirim Biberaj (2-3, 4 RBI, double), Gabe Iavorone (2-3, run, 4 RBI), and Jeffrey Nunez (2-2, run, RBI, walk, double) all recorded multi-hit games for the Huskers.

Luke Esposito (3 innings, 4 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks, 5 strikeouts) earned the win on the mound.

Yorktown 2, Tappan Zee 1
Wednesday, May 21, Granite Knolls Park
The Huskers edged No. 8 Tappan Zee 2-1 in the quarterfinals, scoring the game-winning run on an error in the bottom of the seventh.

Derek Patrissi (7 innings, 4 hits, 1 run, 3 walks, 7 strikeouts) pitched a complete game and recorded Yorktown’s only hit.

“All year he has been lights out,” Yorktown coach C.J. Riefenhauser said. “He’s been doing a great job on the mound for us.”

Mahopac 7, Yorktown 3
Saturday, May 24, Granite Knolls Park
Yorktown jumped out to a 3-0 first-inning lead against No. 4 Mahopac, but the Wolf Pac rallied to win 7-3 in the double-elimination semifinal round.

Two of Yorktown’s first-inning runs came on a two-run single by Biberaj.

“We were working counts, getting guys on base, putting the bat on the ball,” Riefenhauser said.

After scoring in the second, Mahopac tied the game on a two-run homer by Jack Moeller in the third. Nate Mascoll gave the Wolf Pac a 4-3 lead in the fourth with a solo homer to center.

Biberaj helped keep the deficit to one by throwing out a runner trying to steal second for the first out of the sixth.

“Anytime you can get a guy to throw somebody out, or a big strikeout, or a nice diving catch, it definitely fires a team up,” Riefenhauser said.

Mahopac sealed the win with three insurance runs in the seventh.

Ornstein (2-4) and Esposito (2-3, double) led Yorktown at the plate.

“I thought we hit the ball well today,” Riefenhauser said. “We were hitting it right at a lot of guys. At the end of the day, we got hurt with the long ball—we gave up two home runs. We just have to throw more strikes, that’s it.”

Yorktown went on to beat No. 6 John Jay-Cross River on May 27 at Granite Knolls Park 5-4 in 10 innings.

LAKELAND SOFTBALL (11-10)
Lakeland 21, Edgemont 11
Friday, May 23, Edgemont Jr./Sr. High School
Tied at 10-10 going into the seventh, No. 9 Lakeland erupted for 11 runs to earn a 21-11 victory against No. 8 Edgemont in the opening round of the Section 1 Class A tournament.

“We fed off each other’s energy and kept the momentum going,” said Nicole Mautone. “Everyone contributed differently, and it was a good team effort.”

The Hornets were motivated not to see their season end.

“Scoring 11 runs in one inning is not very easy to do, but we rallied knowing that we didn’t want this to be our last game,” said Jenna Yazzetti. “This win makes us more motivated for tomorrow.”

Mautone (3-5, single, triple; 4 innings pitched, strikeout) drove in seven runs.

“It was a big game, and I knew I needed to go up and put the ball in play,” she said. “I was confident and focused on staying relaxed and trusting my approach.”

Yazzetti (2-4, single, triple) knocked in six runs.

“Constantly practicing helped my ability to hit the ball, but I also feel as a catcher I have a better sense of reading pitches and can hit the ball where it is pitched,” she said.

Arianna DeEsso (3-4, RBI; winning pitcher, 3 innings, 4 strikeouts), Madi Panos (2-4, walk), and Gianna Santini (3-4, RBI) also contributed.

“We had a great week of preparation at practice focusing on hitting, and it showed today,” said coach Danielle Fiore. “It felt great. It meant that we were prepared and live to see another day.”

Magnus 3, Lakeland 0
Saturday, May 24, Albertus Magnus High School
Lakeland held top-seeded Albertus Magnus scoreless through five innings, but the No. 8-ranked team in the state Class A poll plated three late runs to win 3-0.

Mautone pitched six innings with two strikeouts. Lilianna Aguirre walked and reached second on an error.

LAKELAND/PANAS GIRLS LACROSSE (6-12)
Lakeland/Panas 9, Brewster 8
Monday, May 19, Brewster High School
Brooke Pizzarello (4G, 1A), Maddie DiMirco (2G, 2A), Katelyn Kuney (2G), Gabby Goldstein (1G, 1A), Lilly Whippo (1A), and goalie Veronica Lynch (10 saves) led Lakeland/Panas to a 9-8 win in its regular-season finale.

“We were able to come away with the win by playing with everything we had,” Pizzarello said.

Lakeland/Panas 17, Clarkstown North 5
Friday, May 23, Clarkstown North High School
No. 7 Lakeland/Panas routed No. 10 Clarkstown North 17-5 in the opening round of the Section 1 Class B tournament.

Pizzarello (6G, 1A), DiMirco (3G, 5A), Goldstein (3G), Anna Lemma (2G, 1A), Emma Stewart (1G), Brooke Stewart (1G), Kuney (1G), Lynch (6 saves), and Ava Canniff (1 save) contributed.

“It feels great to show what the Rebels are capable of when they stay focused and committed for an entire game,” coach Leah DiSisto said. “I am so happy my seniors were able to experience another great win.”

Ball distribution was key.

“The team has really been focusing on selfless play,” DiSisto said. “When I see goals spread between numerous girls, I know they are working hard to set each other up for success.”

Pizzarello also reached a milestone with her 200th varsity goal.

“It meant a lot to me getting my 200th goal in a win in the sectionals,” she said.

“Our team played very well offensively by keeping our heads up and playing unselfish,” she added.

DiMirco’s five assists reflected that unselfishness.

“It sounds simple, but when we work together as a team and set each other up for success, everything else falls into place,” she said.

DiMirco is one of four seniors, along with Lemma, Whippo, and Ari Prashad.

“It meant a lot to all of us, especially me and the other seniors, because we want to make the best of our last season,” she said. “It was a huge confidence booster.”

Lakeland/Panas fell to Horace Greeley 15-3 on Wednesday, May 28.

Fifth-seeded Yorktown (10-7), ranked No. 10 in the state, traveled to No. 4 Harrison and won 16-5.
