Yorktown’s Schaeffer makes first varsity start

Alex Mautone (2-for-3), Kevin Brown (1-for-3, RBI) and Charlie Cappo (first varsity hit) stood out for Lakeland in its 8-1 loss to John Jay-Cross River.

Wednesday, April 15, Lakeland High School

Brown (5.1 innings pitched, 4 hits, 2 runs, 4 strikeouts, 1 walk), the winning pitcher, led Lakeland to a 5-2 win over Hendrick Hudson.

“I pitched well today because I stayed locked in and trusted my preparation,” Brown said. “I was focused on throwing strikes, hitting spots and getting outs. It also helps that I have a great defense behind me who made big plays. It felt great to help contribute to a great team win.”

Ryan Battista (1.2 innings, 3 strikeouts, save, 2-for-3, run, RBI, 2 stolen bases), Mautone (1 hit, RBI), Cappo (1-for-2, 2 runs, walk) and Mikey Santoiemma (1-for-1, double, 3 RBI, threw out two base runners trying to steal second) also contributed to the victory.

Rye 3, Lakeland 0

Saturday, April 18, Disbrow Park, Rye

Lakeland fell to Rye 3-0, with Doñe (5 innings pitched, 3 runs, 2 strikeouts) and Paul Arundell (1 inning, 2 strikeouts in relief) handling the pitching duties. Cappo (2-for-3), Lou Vernagallo (1-for-3, stolen base), Mautone (hit), Doñe (hit) and Santoiemma (hit) contributed at the plate for the Hornets.

Monday, April 13, Somers High School

Swaraaj Pujari hurled a complete game (5 hits, 3 earned runs, 3 strikeouts, 0 walks) in an 8-3 win over rival Somers.

Pujari (1-for-3, 2 RBI, walk), Lirim Biberaj (1-for-1, 2 RBI, 2 walks, 2 stolen bases), Luke Ciamei (1-for-3) and Xavier Guzman (1-for-2, 1 run, 1 walk, 2 stolen bases) recorded hits for the Huskers.

“It (the win) meant a lot to us as a team,” Pujari said. “Recently we haven’t won as much despite playing well and to get back into the win column is a great feeling and momentum shifter. For it to be against a good Somers team just made the win just that much more satisfying as they are a rival.”

Yorktown 5, John Jay-EF 3

Wednesday, April 15, Granite Knolls Park

Winning pitcher Liam O’Connor (4.2 innings, 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 3 strikeouts), Alex Ornstein (1-for-3, 2 RBI), Lirim Biberaj (3-for-4, 3 RBI) and Luke Ciamei (2-for-2, double) propelled Yorktown to a 5-3 triumph over John Jay East Fishkill.

Friday, April 17, Granite Knolls Park

Yorktown won its third game in a row with a 12-4 victory over Tuckahoe, led by Ornstein (2-for-2, RBI), Lirim Biberaj (3-for-4, 2 RBI), Travis Maher (2-for-3, 2 RBI) and Brayden Saviano (2 innings, 0 runs, 4 strikeouts in relief).

Wednesday, April 15, Arlington High School

Sophia Marcello (58 passing yards, 1 passing touchdown, 18 rushing yards), Maddy Reilly (39 rushing yards), Liv DelGaudio (19 receiving yards, 1 receiving touchdown), Stephanie Douglas (11 total tackles, 10 solo, 1 for loss), Kayleigh Hung (7 total tackles, 4 solo, 3 for loss, 3 sacks), Chloe Quiles (5 solo tackles) and Erin Duffy (1 interception, 3 solo tackles) paced Yorktown in its 7-0 victory over Arlington.

“It felt amazing to get the win and the shutout against Arlington,” Hung said. “It’s always really rewarding to see all of our hard defensive work pay off. As a team, we take a lot of pride in our defense, so being able to keep a shutout was a great feeling, especially against a strong opponent. I think we were able to shut them out because of our teamwork and communication on the field.”

Hung added that assistant coach Jeff Cerar “does a really good job preparing us, and we had a lot of trust in each other when we were on the goal line.”

Tuesday, April 14, Tappan Zee High School

Caroline Daly (7 tackles), Emily Hahn (interception), Caroline Leonard (4 tackles, interception), Amelia Calisi (4 tackles, 2 catches, 7 yards) and Alex Marrico (23 rushing yards, 1 rushing touchdown) led Lakeland in its 26-6 loss to Tappan Zee.

Monday, April 13, Suffern High School

Gianna Santini (4-for-5, 2 singles, 2 doubles, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Nicole Mautone (3-for-4, 2 singles, double, 4 RBI, 3 runs, 7 innings pitched, 9 strikeouts) and Jenna Yazzetti (3-for-4, 3 singles, 2 walks, 4 RBI, 2 runs) propelled Lakeland to an 18-1 win over Suffern.

“We showed a lot of patience at the plate yesterday and found the right pitch to hit,” Santini said. “Also, our high energy in the dugout fueled our team to try their hardest.”

Liliana Aguirre (2-for-3, single, triple, 2 RBI, 2 runs), Santini (2-for-3, 2 singles, run) and Mautone (3 strikeouts) led Lakeland in its 6-4 loss to Carmel.

Kate Brown (6 innings, 2 earned runs, 5 hits, 6 strikeouts, 0 walks, 2-for-3 at the plate) stood out for the Huskers in their 3-2 loss to Carmel.

Saturday, April 18, Walter Panas High School

Sophomore Isabella Schaeffer (4 innings, 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts) made her first varsity start with Brown (3 innings, 1 hit, 0 runs, 1 walks, 4 strikeouts) recording the victory in relief, in the Huskers’ 7-3 win against Walter Panas. 

Kate Brown has always been a role model for Schaeffer.

“I’m thrilled to have pitched in my first varsity game for Yorktown. It’s been a dream of mine since I was 8 years old,” Schaeffer said. “I’m grateful to have the honor to play and win with such talented teammates. I also appreciate the coaches giving me this opportunity to do what I love.”

Katie Egan (3-for-4, run, RBI, double), Nina Fasce (2-for-3, 2 runs), Alicia Cinicolo (home run) and Brown (2-for-3, run, RBI) highlighted the Huskers’ offensive effort.

Lakeland/Panas Boys Lacrosse (3-5)

Wednesday, April 15, Harrison High School

CC Savastano (3G, 1A), Aaron Federoff (3G), Anthony Ray (2G, 1A), Keaton Wolf (2A), Anthony Costa (2A), Gio LaPeruta (1G), Mike Zumatto (1A), Dan Horowitz (14 saves) and Nate Horowitz (7 face-offs won) ignited Lakeland/Panas to a 9-4 victory over Harrison.

“After a rough week we all stayed together and we kept believing in ourselves and coaching staff,” Savastano said. “We came out today and played real hard and everyone did their job.”

Saturday, April 18, Walter Panas High School

Ray (2G, 1A), Federoff (2G, 1A), Savastano (1G, 1A), Costa (1G), Wolf (1A) and Horowitz (11 saves) led Lakeland/Panas in its 17-6 loss to Notre Dame-West Haven 17-6.

Mahopac 11, Lakeland/Panas 8

Tuesday, April 14, Mahopac High School

Lakeland/Panas fell to Mahopac 11-8, paced by Brooke Pizzarello (3G, 1A), Gabby Goldstein (3G), Katelyn Kuney (1G), Sofia Hoffman (1G) and Veronica Lynch (10 saves, including her 200th career save).

“Reaching 200 career saves means a lot to me because I got to see all my hard work pay off,” Lynch said. “I wouldn’t have been able to get there without the help of the defense. I feel like every save is a win for the team.”

Saturday, April 18, Hendrick Hudson High School

Goldstein (2G, 2A), Pizzarello (3G), Kuney (2G, 1A), Emma Stewart (1G, 1A), Hoffman (1G, 1A), Mya Wilkowski (1G), Brooke Stewart (1G) and Lynch (9 saves) led Lakeland/Panas in its 11-8 victory over Hendrick Hudson.
