Yorktown memorial gives names to lives lost

Posted

Each lock on the fence behind Patriot Skate Park carries a name, a life and a story — a permanent reminder of those Yorktown families have lost to the drug epidemic.

The Drug Epidemic Awareness Memorial, located next to Yorktown Town Hall, has become a place where families can remember loved ones, honor their lives and find comfort in knowing they are not forgotten.

The chain-link fence, adorned with locks memorializing loved ones lost to drugs, also features signage and a QR code that links to resources.

On Wednesday, Sept. 30, community members gathered at Town Hall community members gathered to honor the lives lost to the drug epidemic. The ceremony featured speakers representing local resources, along with the reading of names and “forever ages” of those memorialized with locks on the fence.

“For many families, this is a place where they can come to remember their loved one,” said Liz Talbert, Executive Director of the Alliance for Safe Kids.

The annual ceremony also provides an opportunity to address the stigma surrounding substance use and loss by putting names and stories at the center of the conversation.

Additional information about the memorial, including how to obtain a lock, is available on the Drug Epidemic Awareness Memorial Facebook page.
