Yorktown is joining communities across the country in recognizing June as Pride Month.
At the June 2 Town Board meeting, Supervisor Ed Lachterman read a proclamation recognizing the month and reaffirming the town's commitment to inclusion and equality.
Through the proclamation, town officials are reaffirming a commitment to celebrate and recognize “the diversity, resilience and contributions of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (LGBTQ+) community.”
Pride Month is celebrated each June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York City, a pivotal event that ignited the modern movement for LGBTQ+ rights and equality in the United States.
The proclamation notes that the town values a diverse community where all individuals are treated with dignity and respect, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.
It also states that the month-long celebration offers an opportunity to reflect on the progress made, acknowledge the challenges that remain and commit to fostering an environment that is inclusive, safe and supportive for all members of the LGBTQ+ community.
The proclamation, Lachterman read, states that the town is “proud to stand with our LGBTQ+ residents, families, employees, and visitors, recognizing their important contributions to the social, cultural, economic, and civic life of our community.”
