Yorktown marks 82nd anniversary of D-Day

Posted

The Yorktown Town Board has proclaimed June 6 as a day of remembrance marking the 82nd anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy.

In the proclamation, town officials recognized the estimated 156,000 American, British and Canadian troops who participated in the June 6, 1944, invasion of Nazi-occupied France, one of the largest amphibious military assaults in history.

The proclamation honors the service members whose actions helped turn the tide of World War II in Europe and calls on residents to observe the anniversary through programs, ceremonies and activities that recognize those who fought and died in defense of freedom.

“Today, as we carry the struggle for liberty and universal human rights, let us draw strength from a moment when free nations beat back the forces of oppression and gave new hope to the world,” the proclamation said.
