Yorktown joins national effort to raise breast cancer awareness

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y.— The Yorktown Town Board has joined communities nationwide in recognizing October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, highlighting the importance of early detection, research, and support for those affected by the disease.

Breast cancer remains one of the most common cancers among women worldwide, impacting millions of individuals and families each year. Health experts continue to stress that early detection and regular screenings can significantly improve survival rates.

Town officials encouraged residents to take part in awareness efforts throughout the month — by wearing pink, learning about prevention and early detection, and supporting fundraising initiatives for research and patient services.

The proclamation, read by Councilwoman Luciana Haughwout on behalf of the Town Board, also commended healthcare professionals, researchers, and advocates for their ongoing work in education and treatment.

The board recognized Yorktown’s Support Connection, which hosted its annual Support-A-Walk on  Oct. 5. Founded to promote compassion and connection, the walk draws thousands of participants who come together to celebrate survivors, honor loved ones, and show encouragement for those currently in treatment. Proceeds fund the organization's free services such as peer counseling, support groups, wellness programs, and educational resources.
