YORKTOWN, N.Y. —The family of the late Yorktown Police Captain Kenneth Sgroi, who passed away in January 2023, joined two local organizations, town officials, and members of the police department at its headquarters on Thursday to present $3,270 donations collected in his honor to the Alliance for Safe Kids and United for the Troops.
March 16 marks the third “Captain Kenneth Sgroi Act of Kindness Day” in Yorktown, honoring the life and contributions of Sgroi. The annual celebration of his life falls on the anniversary of the day that he first joined the Yorktown Police Department. The collecting of donations for local organizations is a way to pay tribute to Sgroi’s selfless attitude and desire to always help others.
Chief of Police Robert Noble said Sgroi was a “shining star” in the department.
“True to his character, he never thought of himself any better than anybody else,” Noble said. “He was a friend to us, a brother, somebody who we loved. He will never ever be forgotten.”
Sgroi’s wife, Anne Sgroi, attended the presentation of the donations to the charities, backed by her family and standing with her two children, who she said, “love coming to visit where their dad worked, and love seeing Kenny’s name and picture everywhere.”
“I know Yorktown police will always be part of our family,” she added.
Town Supervisor Ed Lachterman said days like today make him extra “grateful” to work in Yorktown. The celebration of kindness, he added, represents all that Sgroi was.
“It's always a tragedy to lose someone so dedicated and so young at the prime of their life in a career that is dedicated to helping people,” Lachterman said. “Every time there is tragedy, we look for the good, we look for the messages from God, we look for things that God opens our eyes to.”
Noble called on the community to be a little more like Sgroi.
“We should be kind every day,” he said, but in Sgroi’s honor, “be extra kind" on March 16.
