Yorktown is mourning the tragic loss of an 18-year-old college student who was shot and killed near her college, Loyola University Chicago.
According to local Chicago news outlets, Sheridan Gorman was with a group of friends when a masked man approached on foot, pulled out a gun and opened fire in their direction at around 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Gorman is remembered as a loving daughter, friend and student who was a positive force to those who knew her.
“It is with an absolutely broken heart that I share the loss of beloved YHS graduate, Sheridan Gorman. We are so deeply shattered by this tragic and senseless loss. Our hearts are with Sheridan’s family, friends, and all who knew and loved her,” Superintendent of Schools Ron Hattar wrote in a letter to the district community. “Sheridan was loved by all who knew her, and her impact on students and staff alike was profound. She was a shining light for so many people.”
While Yorktown students do not have to report to school Friday because it is a superintendent’s conference day, Hattar said members of the clinical team will be available to offer support.
“We recognize that this is an unimaginably difficult time,” he wrote. “Please know that high school students may arrange a time to meet with any one of our clinicians tomorrow or any day following the weekend.”
