The Garden Club of Yorktown celebrates 100 years, launches poster contest

The Garden Club of Yorktown (GCY) is marking a milestone: 100 years of tending gardens and cultivating community. Founded in 1926, the club is celebrating its centennial under the theme “100 Years in Bloom: Honoring the Past, Planting the Future.” The theme honors past generations who kept gardens flourishing and future generations whose caretaking role has never been greater.

During this anniversary year, GCY plans to “Plant 100 Trees” at Hilltop Hanover Farms, bury a time capsule, and host educational programs in addition to its regular beautification activities.

Poster contest announced

As part of the celebration, the GCY is also launching a poster contest, which will be open to all students in the Yorktown and Lakeland School Districts. Students (grades K-5 and 6-12) are invited to design a poster illustrating the theme "What Makes Yorktown Beautiful." Submissions are due by April 1.

“For 100 years, the Garden Club has been planting, decorating and making our town shine,” organizers said. “Now it’s your chance to create something colorful and creative to mark this milestone.”

Winning posters will be displayed at the Hart Library in September before being returned to the students.

Each poster must include the student’s name, grade, school and telephone number on the back. Submissions should be delivered to each district’s central administration building Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.

“Grab your crayons, markers, and paints and show off your talent – your poster could be part of a once-in-a-century celebration,” organizers said.
