The Garden Club of Yorktown has announced the winners of its 100th anniversary poster contest, which invited students in the Lakeland and Yorktown school districts to create artwork based on the theme, “What Makes Yorktown Beautiful.”
Winners were recognized during an awards ceremony June 13 at the John C. Hart Memorial Library.
Entries submitted by April 1 were judged in two categories: grades K-5 and grades 6-12.
In the K-5 division, Kiera McGovern, a first-grade student at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, won first place in the Lakeland Central School District. Her poster incorporated natural greenery and mixed-media art materials to create a multidimensional design celebrating the Garden Club of Yorktown’s 100th anniversary.
Amelia Stephen, a fifth-grade student at Crompond Elementary School, won first place in the Yorktown Central School District. Her poster highlighted the club’s centennial while showcasing bees and other pollinators, native plants, trees, water sources and colorful flowers. She was unable to attend the awards presentation held June 13.
In the grades 6-12 category, no entries were received from Lakeland students. In Yorktown, Cora Condron earned first place for a submission featuring pink four-petal flowers. Brooke Dietz placed second, and Lianna Palumbo took third place with a sunflower-themed design.
Winning entries were also submitted by Jack Bonilla, a first-grade student at Ben Franklin Elementary School, and Lilyann Jamal, a fifth-grade student at Ben Franklin Elementary School, who earned second place for her poster celebrating the club’s motto, “green since 1926.”
Second- and third-place winning entries were submitted by kindergarten and third-grade siblings Brio and Harmoni Leonard.
The winning artwork will be displayed at the John C. Hart Memorial Library throughout September as part of the Garden Club of Yorktown’s 100th anniversary celebration.
