Saturday, May 9, Yorktown High School
Yorktown, the No. 6-ranked Class B team in the state, won its 11th game in a row and in the process clinched the league title with a 12-6 victory against Lakeland, ranked No. 22.
“Our coaches always do such a great job getting us ready for games, so it felt really awesome that our team was able to win the league championship for them and our seniors,” said Marcello, a sophomore.
With 5:19 remaining in the second quarter, Marcello (124 passing yards, 17 rushing yards) connected with Reilly on a 16-yard touchdown pass that gave Yorktown a 6-0 halftime lead.
“On our first touchdown, Maddy made an amazing adjustment to get open and took it all the way to the end zone,” Marcello said.
An electrifying 43-yard punt return down the sideline for a touchdown by Lakeland’s Alexa Marrico with 1:53 to go in the third quarter tied the game at 6-6.
“We were down by six and I knew that we had to give 100 percent each play,” Marrico said. “As I got the ball from the punt return, I did my best to make Yorktown miss. It felt great to get my team back into the game, getting that touchdown got our rhythm back and allowed us to play with confidence. The energy around us was unmatched during the punt return. I think this was one of our best and most intense games we’ve played this season.”
Yorktown took the lead 12-6 with 7:37 remaining in the game when Marcello hooked up with Duffy on an 18-yard touchdown pass.
“We had some huge first-down catches, and then Erin made an insane catch for the go-ahead score,” Marcello said. “And once again, our defense was amazing.”
That defense sealed the game when Quiles (4 solo flag pulls) came up with a clutch interception with less than a minute remaining, which she returned from her 4-yard line to the Husker 37.
Douglas (6 solo flag pulls) and Soliz (5 total flag pulls, 3 solo, 2 sacks) also came up big defensively for Yorktown.

Yorktown 3, Somers 1
Tuesday, May 5, Primrose Elementary School, Somers
Yorktown handed Somers, which entered the game 10-0, its first loss of the season by defeating the Tuskers 3-1.
“It felt amazing,” Brown said. “They are such a great team and even better competition, we really battled with them. Many of us are friends and we have a lot of respect for Somers, but we were confident. As a team we were pretty locked in overall and constantly cheering each other on. We are very close as a group.”
Brown (7 innings, 8 hits, 1 earned run, 1 walk, 6 strikeouts) stood out on the mound.
Brown said she and catcher Kaitlyn Horn “made a plan on how to pitch to them and stuck to it throughout the whole game.”
She added that she “felt strong, thought I was able to keep them off balance for the most part, and the plan paid off. I’m so proud of how we came together for such a big win.”
Brown would need that effort considering who was pitching for Somers.
“Emily Boyle is such a great pitcher, one of the best in the section,” Brown said. “We only got five hits but were able to make the most of them. Ally Pace (2-3, 3 stolen bases) had a big RBI and Alicia Cinicolo had two key RBI including a sacrifice fly.”
Brown said the win was an all-around team effort.
“Our defense made excellent plays, especially Katie Egan coming up big in left field, and Nina Fasce at third base,” Brown said. We also made some smart baserunning decisions to help us get runners into scoring position, which helped us so much in the end.”

“This is the first time we’ve played, we were scheduled last year but got snowed out,” Justin McCarthy said. “It’s really cool to go head to head against your brother, not many people have the opportunity to do something like that. Especially with my dad (assistant coach Mike McCarthy) being on the field too it’s a really cool thing for my mom and family to see us all competing together. We are hoping to make it a yearly game.”
Trevor McCarthy was happy to be back at his alma mater.
“Today was really cool,” Trevor McCarthy said. “Walking up the hill and seeing all the new additions to the field and getting to play against my brother and dad was a special feeling. Lakeland will always be a special place for me and I’d love to continue to play those guys as long as I’m doing this.”
