Sept. 10 marks World Suicide Prevention Day

YORKTOWN HEIGHTS, N.Y.—The Town of Yorktown is raising awareness for suicide prevention, recognized throughout the month of September.

The World Health Organization and the International Association for Suicide Prevention observe Sept. 10 as World Suicide Prevention Day. Yorktown joined the global effort during its Sept. 2 board meeting, acknowledging that suicide is “a serious public health issue that affects people of all ages, races, and backgrounds across the globe” and encouraging residents “to learn the warning signs of suicide, listen with empathy and without judgement, and reach out to those who may be struggling.”

The theme for 2025 is “creating hope through action,” which, according to the board, “reminds us that our actions, no matter how big or small, can provide hope to those who are struggling with mental health challenges and suicidal ideation. Communities, educators, mental health professionals, and individuals all play a vital role in promoting mental wellness, encouraging open conversations, and supporting those in need.”

A memorial event will be held at 6 p.m. Sept. 25 at the Drug Epidemic Awareness Memorial, located at 341 Underhill Ave., to honor those lost to substance abuse.
