Yorktown 13, Mahopac 5

Saturday, May 30, Yorktown High School

Yorktown defeated No. 4 Mahopac 13-5 in the semifinals of the Section 1 Class B Tournament.

Mahopac scored first, but Yorktown answered with three straight goals in the opening quarter. The third came from Larsen with 1:31 remaining in the period, giving Yorktown a 3-1 lead.

Larsen said that assistant coach Tim Fallo “drew up a play during the time out and we ran it and it went as planned.”

He added that “it was extremely important to respond with three straight goals especially after how tough they were playing.”

The Huskers outscored the Wolf Pac 4-2 in the second quarter, with Sheridan (2G) scoring the final goal late in the period to give Yorktown a 7-3 halftime lead.

“It was a great team play, Vincent Marchini was able to make a great dodge and get the defense moving,” Sheridan said. “He found me on the backside and I had space to dodge again and get my hands free for a shot. It definitely helped us with the momentum going into the second half.”

In the third quarter, Mahopac and Yorktown exchanged goals before Ofrias (3G, 1A) scored with 1:33 remaining in the period to give the Huskers a 9-4 lead.

“All week a big thing we talked about was pushing the ball in transition, and we actually messed up the fast break and the ball was loose,” Ofrias said. “JT got a tough ground ball and the goalie made a good save on his shot but I was in a good spot and was able to finish the rebound for a goal.”

The Huskers sealed the game by outscoring Mahopac 4-1 in the final quarter.

JT Carney (3G), Gianluca Marchini (1G), Concannon (1G), Tommy Carney (1G, 1A), Vinny Marchini (1A), Mezzatesta (13 saves) and Caricati (1G, 11-17 faceoffs won) also contributed to the victory.

Yorktown was scheduled to host No. 2 Horace Greeley, ranked No. 20 in the state, on Wednesday, June 3, after this edition of Yorktown News went to press in the Section 1 Class B title game.
