YORKTOWN, N.Y. —For Yorktown High School senior Isabella Baker, singing has always been second nature. From joining her elementary school chorus to finding confidence on stage, music has been a constant in her life. As she gets ready to start her new chapter at the New York Performing Arts Academy for acting, we asked her to reflect on her journey so far.
When did your interest in singing begin?
I became interested in singing in elementary school. Singing was practically my first language. I remember having the opportunity to join chorus in fourth grade at Crompond. I was so thrilled and super anxious at the same time. Performing on stage has become a place where I am the most comfortable and confident even though I’m such a shy person.
Do you plan to continue singing after high school?
I will be attending the New York Performing Arts Academy for acting for TV/Film/Stage. While I will not be participating in a choir after high school, I plan to continue voice training and musical theater classes. I would also like to learn a new instrument—definitely piano. I took private violin lessons for several years leading up to seventh grade. My new schedule will allow me to include many new activities which I didn’t have the extra time for throughout high school. I am really excited and ready for this next chapter!
Who inspires you?
My mom inspires me. She is my biggest fan. She encourages me to focus on what makes me the happiest and not to be my own critic. My mom motivates me to keep growing even when it feels challenging. She reminds me that great things happen right after it feels overwhelming.
My mom is also a great support at my high school and in the Yorktown School district. She volunteers her time by leading the First Nighters Friends of the Arts parent-run organization. This group helps fundraise and raise awareness for the performing arts and students in the district.
What makes singing challenging?
What makes singing challenging is when you lose your voice! Last year, I had a terrible cold that affected my vocal cords and I lost my voice for several weeks. I quickly realized that voice care is extremely essential even if you are not sick. A few practices that I find so helpful are voice rest especially leading up to a concert or show and drinking plenty of water. Using a room steam vaporizer and gargling with warm water and salt are also a part of my routine.
What do you do in your free time?
I love going to see Broadway and Off-Broadway shows! My family, cousins, friends and I plan trips to see shows just about every season. I also love to act and be a part of my school’s drama and musical performances. On the other days, I love to read books, play and sing with my little sister, and grab a Pink drink from Starbucks while enjoying my down time.
