YAC golfer Marcella Chiazzese wins Harrison Apar award

Posted

At the Yorktown Athletic Club golf program’s Oct. 26 awards breakfast to culminate the fall season, Director of Instruction Skip Marini presented what he called the “most prestigious award,” named in memory of Harrison Apar, to Marcella Chiazzese. The award honors fortitude and sportsmanship, reflecting the indomitable spirit of Harrison, a Yorktowner who was born with dwarfism and a heart condition, yet played and officiated YAC sports. He died in 2003 at age 15 after his third heart surgery.

On hand to talk about his son and the meaning of the award was Bruce Apar, whose remarks elicited a strong emotional reception from the gathering. Also attending were Marcella’s parents, Benny and Daniela, and sisters, Milania and Mattea.

Yorktown golf guru Marini is on quite a roll of late. YAC’s youth golf program had its strongest participation to date this past season with 59 players. He also coaches Yorktown High School’s varsity golf team, which has won its league division the last three years running. One of Marini’s varsity players, Joe Carey, won the Section 1 championship and was named Lohud Player of the Year. Along with brother Greg, the Careys are the first siblings to make the New York State Section 1 golf team, which this year was comprised of nine boys and nine girls.
