Thursday, March 27, Fox Lane High School
Lakeland opened its season in fine fashion with a 48–0 win against Fox Lane.
“Starting the season with such a convincing win just showed us and other teams what we are capable of moving forward especially if we keep putting the work in,” said Amanda Franco.
Franco (72 rushing yards, touchdown; 5-for-8, 48 passing yards), Caroline Daly (127 rushing yards, touchdown), Emily Hahn (10 rushing yards, touchdown; 6 receiving yards; two 1-point conversions), Caroline Leonard (10 rushing yards), Aditi Parambath (61 rushing yards, touchdown; 5-for-8, 45 passing yards, touchdown), and Gabby Santini (31 rushing yards, touchdown; 87 receiving yards, touchdown; two 1-point conversions) ignited Lakeland offensively.
Amelia Calisi (1 tackle), Kacey Chin (3 tackles), Daly (4 tackles, 2 for a loss, safety), Emily Daniel (2 tackles), Franco (1 tackle), Hahn (1 tackle, 1 interception, pick-six), Mackenzie Latorre (1 tackle), Leonard (1 tackle), Mia Lucia (1 tackle, 1 for a loss, safety), Lynae Petrosino (2 tackles), Mia Rodrigues (1 tackle), Santini (1 tackle), Haley Santucci (9 tackles), and Ava Stabile (4 tackles) contributed on defense. Santini added 40 punt-return yards and Hahn had 13.
“The key to playing well in that game was we came out with a lot of excitement and energy along with really good coaching,” Franco said.
It was Franco’s first flag football game after a standout career with Lakeland girls basketball.
“I decided to play flag football because I played when I was really little, and it’s becoming such a great and popular sport,” she said. “I thought this was the perfect opportunity to play with all my friends for one last time. Playing my first flag football game, I started off a little nervous. But once I knew how supportive this team was, I quickly felt good and was thrilled to play.”
Tappan Zee 14, Lakeland 7
Friday, March 28, Lakeland High School
Tappan Zee defeated Lakeland, 14–7, in a rematch of last year’s Section 1 Division 2 semifinal, which the third-seeded Dutchmen won 21–12 over No. 2 Lakeland.
Lakeland jumped out to a 7–0 lead after Parambath rolled right and threw a touchdown pass to Chin in the end zone with 16:31 left in the first half.
Tappan Zee tied it with a 15-yard touchdown pass just before halftime, then took the lead early in the second half on an interception return down the sideline for a 56-yard pick-six. A 2-point conversion made it 14–7 with 13:59 to go.
Yorktown 33, Fox Lane 0
Friday, March 28, Yorktown High School
Yorktown opened its season with a dominant 33–0 win against Fox Lane.
“It meant the world to start off with such a strong win, especially coming off such a strong season from last year,” said junior Mia Chee. “Our team centers around family and the whole game had great energy with everyone supporting each other, and it really sets the mood for the whole season.”
Chee got the scoring started just 1:53 in when she intercepted a pass and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown.
“My pick six started at the beginning of the game and Fox Lane was not far up the field,” Chee said. “I saw the quarterback dropping for the throw and I began to rush up and intercept the ball. It felt great to score the points for the team, especially from a pick-six. It really set the tone for the game and for the rest of the season.”
Yorktown 8, John Jay-CR 0
Saturday, March 29, Yorktown High School
Yorktown earned its second shutout in as many days with an 8–0 win against John Jay–Cross River.
A safety by Keira Mooney with 20:15 left in the first half gave Yorktown a 2–0 lead at the break. Mooney also recorded a sack.
Sophia Marcello (31 rushing yards, 50 passing yards) extended the lead by running in a 10-yard touchdown with 22:09 left. She had dropped back to pass but saw an opening and ran it in just inside the left pylon.
“We were able to capitalize on Eva Monaco and Ava Costello getting our team into scoring position with their runs,” Marcello said. “Our offensive line did a great job blocking allowing me to run in for the touchdown. It felt great knowing we needed it, especially given how well our defense played all game.”
Also contributing were Heilee Leonardo (33 passing yards), Monaco (95 rushing yards, 3 catches, 30 receiving yards), Costello (7 catches, 57 receiving yards), Sofia Gentile (1 tackle, 4 sacks), and Chee (3 tackles, 2 interceptions).
Mamaroneck 16, Lakeland/Panas 8
Thursday, March 27, Walter Panas High School
Lakeland/Panas dropped its opener to Mamaroneck, 16–8. Junior Brooke Pizzarello led the way with 3 goals and 1 assist.
“I attribute the goals and assist to the hard work that I have put in during the offseason,” Pizzarello said. “My teammates also helped create opportunities for us to succeed, which should only continue to develop as the season goes on.”
Pizzarello is committed to Division I University at Albany.
“I decided to commit there because I fell in love with the coaches,” she said. “Coaches (Katie) Thomson, (Katie) Pascale and (Taylor) Frink are so welcoming and great people to play for. UAlbany competes at a very high level by playing some of the best teams in collegiate lacrosse. Watching the girls on the team play and their style stood out to me, and I think that I would be able to fit in right away.”
Maddie DiMirco and Emma Stewart each scored twice, and Gabby Goldstein added a goal. Veronica Lynch made 7 saves in goal.
