Tom Diana Park at Granite Knolls Recreation & Sports Complex will close from Aug. 1-16 while crews repave the facility's main parking lot.
Preparatory work has already begun, with the contractor expected to mobilize as early as Aug. 1. The project includes removing the existing parking lot surface, installing layers of stone to improve drainage and paving the outer portions of the lot with porous asphalt while using traditional asphalt on the main driving lanes.
Parks Superintendent Jim Martorano Jr. said the work is scheduled for early August because asphalt plants are closed during the winter, while spring and fall are the park's busiest seasons. July was also ruled out due to sports camps, and late August conflicts with the start of high school fall sports.
“We had approvals to pave from way back when we were going to have a third party who was awarded an RFP to install solar panels, that installation fell through, but the permit to pave remained open for a few more years, but was close to expiring, so we wanted to prioritize this job while the opportunity was still there,” Martorano said in an email to Yorktown News.
Supervisor Ed Lachterman praised Martorano and his staff.
“The quality of life here is wonderful, and a lot of it is our parks and our recreation,” Lachterman said in a statement issued by the town’s public relations firm.
In addition to the parking lot improvements, the Parks Department is constructing two new volleyball courts at the park using in-house staff to reduce costs.
“We are very excited about these two new upgrades to an already amazing sports complex, but the job is not fully complete,” Martorano said. “We are in the process of adding some sensory experiences to the park as well, with a sensory garden and a sensory pathway.”
Additional information about those future amenities is expected to be released in 2027.
