Town Green—the community events roundup in the print edition of Yorktown News—is always on the lookout for community events, and we often find them by accident. If you have a fundraiser, drive for donations, non-profit class or performance, meet-up, or anything you think your neighbors would like to know about, submit it to us at yorktownnews@halstonmedia.com with “Town Green” in the subject line. We can’t guarantee that every submission will get in but we’ll do our best.
From National Night Out and a Town Board meeting to bulk trash collection and a back-to-school supplies drive, here's what's happening in Yorktown during the week ahead.
Yorktown's bulk trash collection is available for bulky household items, including furniture, mattresses, appliances, rugs, lamps, curtains and blinds, bicycles, and bags of small items. Collection for Section 7 is scheduled for Aug. 3.
The Yorktown Police Department will host National Night Out from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at Jack DeVito Field Veterans Plaza. The free community event will feature music, bounce houses, K-9 demonstrations, food trucks, police vehicles and equipment displays, a meet-and-greet with K-9s Dallas and Spar and their handlers, and opportunities for residents to meet officers from the Yorktown Police Department and members of the Yorktown Police Benevolent Association. Approximately half of the department's officers are expected to attend.
The Yorktown Town Board will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 5, instead of Tuesday due to the National Night Out event. The public session begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Community Housing Board will meet on Wednesday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. in Room 26 at Albert A. Capellini Community & Cultural Center.
Assemblyman Matt Slater, in partnership with the Putnam Community Action Partnership, is collecting new backpacks and $25 gift cards to Staples, Target or Walmart to help local students prepare for the upcoming school year. Donations will be accepted through Wednesday, Aug. 12, at Yorktown Town Hall and several other locations throughout Putnam and Westchester counties.
