For Yorktown-based Support Connection, the mission is personal. The peer counselors are all survivors of breast or ovarian cancers—they lived this truth. Their work is now focused on raising funds and providing support for other women in similar situations.

Support Connection will host its fundraiser, “Hope Takes Flight,” on Thursday, Sept. 18, from 6-8 p.m., to raise awareness and funds for its free, confidential peer counseling services for breast cancer survivors nationwide.

The event, set to be held at The DRIPBar in Rye, 20 Purchase St., will feature a talk by David Pogue of CBS Sunday Morning on healthcare and artificial intelligence and serves as a precursor to the organization’s largest event, Support-A-Walk, scheduled for Oct. 5.

Peer Counselor Laura Markowski said the owner of the wellness company has a large glass window at the front of the store featuring a mural with a big pink breast cancer ribbon that reads “Hope Takes Flight.” The mural includes painted origami cranes in pink and teal, representing breast and ovarian cancer awareness. This, Markowski said, sets the tone for the event, which will also include origami crane decorations inside, promising a visually striking and meaningful evening. Tickets are available at supportconnection.networkforgood.com/events.

“Japanese tradition says that if you fold 1,000 cranes, it brings you hope and luck and resilience,” Markowski said. “We thought that was a nice symbol for Support Connection.”

People can visit the organization’s website to “donate a crane” and include a personalized message. The organization will hold the cranes and display all donations, along with their messages at the walk next month.
