YORKTOWN, N.Y. - On Wednesday, Oct. 15, the Somers-Yorktown swim team gathered at Mildred E. Strang Middle School, where they were joined in the pool by John Jay. Although the visiting team took the win by a score of 54–40, Somers-Yorktown still put up impressive numbers — led by standout swimmer Ansley Edelmann.

Edelmann won the 200 Individual Medley (2:23.70), the 100 Butterfly (1:02.96), and was part of the 200 Freestyle Relay victory alongside Katie Kurth, Ava Burch, and Makayla Pettigrew.

Competing again with Pettigrew, Paige Edelmann, and Kurth, Edelmann also helped secure second place in the 400 Freestyle Relay. When asked about her favorite event, she didn’t hesitate: “I like the 100 Fly,” she assured.

Edelmann has good reason to love the event.

“I’m really close to the school record,” she revealed.

Just half a second off, she plans to go above and beyond her varsity and club training regimen to make history.

“With a lot of additional training," said Edelmann, “I think if I go in fresh, I’ll be able to achieve my goal.”

Next up, Katie Kurth took first in the 200 Freestyle (2:06.55) and celebrated her second-place finish in the 100 Backstroke (1:05.02).

“It’s all about speed,” said Kurth. “You’re always racing. You don’t have time to glide, I like that a lot.”

The only time to slow down comes during the blind turn.

“We all have to know how many strokes to take before we split,” added Kurth. “We train for that every day, so you make sure you have it down for the races.”

Makenna Geraghty shares a similar love for fast-paced events, especially the 100 Butterfly. “I like it because there’s no room to pace,” she said. “You go really fast all the time and I like going fast.”

The 100 Fly also brought out a strong performance from Olivia Sun, who finished second (1:07.69).

“It’s one of my best events,” she said. Sun also helped her team to a second-place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with Annie Abulencia, Ava Burch, and Paige Edelmann.

When it comes to team spirit, Sun highlighted the camaraderie that defines the squad.

“We always cheer each other up, give pep talks and plenty of high fives,” she said.

Despite representing two rival schools, the team’s chemistry couldn’t be stronger.

“We have a treaty,” joked Kara DeVito, who stepped out of her comfort zone to try the breaststroke during the meet. Her humor complemented Kurth’s simple assessment: “We are a super close family. We hang out before, we hang out in the pool, and we’re always together,” she concluded.

Additional strong performances came from Ingrid Mealli, who took third in both the 200 IM and the 100 Backstroke, Annie Abulencia, who placed third in the 50 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle, and Ava Burch, who finished third in the 100 Freestyle and second in the 100 Breaststroke.
