Everything was in place for Saturday, Jan. 17, to be one of the largest Yorktown Repair Cafés since this free community event began in 2018.
Twenty-one volunteer repair coaches and five Repair Café helpers were prepared to greet and try to assist the 75 people already signed up and the expected scores of nonregistered visitors who show up at each event with their beloved but broken items. Food had also been prepared to welcome guests.
Then the snow came.
While many people canceled and stayed home, the hardy souls who did come out brought in 53 items to be repaired. Broken items included lamps, clocks, jewelry, garments, kitchen, household and personal care appliances, and wooden items. Some visitors received one-on-one technology help, while others got their dull knives sharpened.
Attendees left appreciative of the volunteers who donated their time and skills on a snowy Saturday to help strangers.
The next Yorktown Repair Café is scheduled for Saturday, April 25, at Grace Lutheran Church, 3830 Gomer St. More information is available at RepairCafeHV.org.
