Snapchat threat deemed non-credible

SHRUB OAK, N.Y.—A threat targeting Lakeland High School shared on a Snapchat group chat late Thursday (Oct. 23) night has been determined to be non-credible, the school district said.

Law enforcement and district officials immediately conducted a full threat assessment and investigation, Superintendent of Schools Karen Gagliardi said in a community safety update on Oct. 24. Authorities said the threat posed no danger to students or staff.

According to Gagliardi, students found to have engaged in inappropriate or disruptive behavior related to this incident will face application of the district’s code of conduct.

She said the notification’s goal was to keep the community informed and prevent the circulation of “false or misleading information.” She added that the district will continue to work with local law enforcement, and updates or additional information will be provided to the community as needed.

“It is important to remember that threats shared on social media, whether written or via pictures, even within friend groups or private chats, are taken seriously and monitored by federal authorities for credibility,” Gagliardi wrote. “Content shared in these spaces can create fear and anxiety, even when a threat is determined to be non-credible.”

Community members are urged to report any concerns or suspicious activity to school officials or local authorities.
