Tuesday, Jan. 20, Yorktown High School
Yorktown defeated John Jay-Cross River 64-12 on its senior night, with Rocco Lore, Gentile, Yakout, Scalera II and Nick Salerno being honored before the match.
“Winning on my senior night was a nice cap off to the great dual meet win we had and felt really good,” Lore, who recently was named Class A All-State Honorable Mention in football, said. “Going out there and dominating a pretty solid kid was a nice way to go out on senior night and was really important to me.”

Brigham Memorial Tournament

Yorktown participated in the Gene Brigham Memorial Tournament, with Rocco Lore (215, second), Luca Lore (110, third), Hobson (103, fourth), and Rowan Larsen (144, fourth) standing out for the Huskers.
County Championship
Saturday, Jan. 24, Sleepy Hollow High School
Yorktown and Lakeland/Panas both competed at the Westchester County Championships.
Leading the Huskers, who placed sixth with 95.5 points, were Caricati (175, first), McCormack (103, second), Duran (175, fourth), Yakout (165, fourth), and Cuenca (138, sixth).
Dan Horowitz (132, second), Matt Clyman (157, second), and Mike Santoiemma (144, sixth) did the job for the Rebels, who placed 12th as a team with 68 points.
Iona Prep won the event with 209 points, while Fox Lane was the top Section 1 finisher, placing second with 156 points.
Multi-meet Event
Saturday, Jan. 24, Walter Panas High School
Lakeland/Panas and Yorktown both competed in a multi-meet event with 80 matches, lasting more than three and a half hours.
“It was lots of good wrestling for the kids,” Lakeland/Panas coach Dave Bergen said.

Lakeland/Panas’ Nate Horowitz (118, pin), Carlos R. Pagan (132, pin), Dan Horowitz (138, pin), Santoiemma (144, pin), Clyman (157, technical fall, 15-0), Steven Sommovigo (165, technical fall, 17-1), and Raul Aristy (190, pin) all won their matches in the Rebels’ 40-40 tie against Harrison.
The highlight of the match was sophomore Dan Horowitz earning his 100th-career win. He recorded his 50th victory during his very first match as a freshman.
Horowitz has been a three-sport athlete since seventh grade. Along with wrestling for Lakeland/Panas, he trains with GPS Wrestling Club in Armonk and travels nationally with the True Lacrosse Club team. He is also the starting goalie for the Lakeland/Panas boys lacrosse squad, a role he earned as a ninth grader, garnering All-League honors.
This past fall, he was captain on the Lakeland JV football team and earned his varsity letter as well.
“It means a lot,” Dan Horowitz said of winning his 100th-career match. “I’m excited that I was able to accomplish this in under four years, although as an athlete I obviously wish I did it sooner. I’m happy I’ve consistently won matches for the team and that when coach (Dave Bergen) puts me in the lineup he can feel confident most of the time I will pick up a win for us.”

Lakeland/Panas fell to Rye 42-34, with Nate Horowitz (118, pin), Vincenzo Maragalino (126, pin), Carlos M. Pagan (138, forfeit), Santoiemma (144, major decision, 13-3), Clyman (157, pin), and Aaron Oo (285, forfeit) getting into the winners’ circle for the Rebels.
Westchester County Championships

Lakeland/Panas and Yorktown both competed at the Westchester County Championships.
On the boys side, doing the job for the Rebels was senior Dylan Young (fifth place, pole vault, 10 feet, 6 inches), sophomore Isaac Arias (10th, pole vault, 9 feet), junior Steve Sandoval (seventh, weight throw, 45-1.25, personal best), sophomore Alex Araujo (15th, weight throw, 37-10.5, personal record), junior Dan Flannery (15th, triple jump, 34-3.5), senior Michael Calloway (15th, long jump, 18-3), junior Julian Davidson (fourth, high jump, 5-4), senior Nischal Grabe (13th, 1,000-meter, 2:46.58), junior Bryant Galiber (15th, 600-meter, 1:30.86), senior Geovanny Pena (18th, 55-meter hurdles, 9.21), Grabe, sophomore Ian Mejia, junior Billy Pike, and freshman Gideon Eduful (seventh, 4x800-meter relay, 8:53.77), and Calloway, Grabe, Galiber, and junior Chase Bennett (seventh, 4x400-meter relay, 3:46.18).
As for the Rebel girls, standing out were junior Riley Scott (fifth, 55-meter dash, 7.58, sixth, 300-meter run, 43.39), sophomore Jaelynn Chelly (ninth, 300-meter run, 42.96), sophomore Aaliyah Thomas (13th, 600-meters, 1:49.15), junior Margaret Keating (13th, 1,500-meter run, 5:17.96, seventh, 3,000-meters, 11:08.59), sophomore Eden Picardi (ninth, racewalk, 9:36.09), sophomore Ayah Abreu (14th, racewalk, 10:39.34), senior Deja Farquharson (14th, shot put, 23-10.75), sophomore Cece Garcia (seventh, weight throw, 27-3.25), sophomore Ashley Oubina (13th, weight throw, 23-2.75), Keating, sophomore Brianna Burdett, sophomore Adi Leal, and junior Liza Gjokiq (eighth, 4x800-meter relay, 11:37.36), and Scott, Chelly, Thomas, and sophomore Zoe Waugh (eighth, 4x200-meter relay, 1:52.84).
Both the Rebel boys and girls squads also won their respective league championships on Jan. 19.
“A lot of our athletes solidified their marks for the sectional championships mid-February and the state qualifier meet at the end of February,” said Lakeland/Panas coach John Benvin. “So that gives us something to focus and train on before the calendar leaves January and February and heads into March, which signifies the spring season. Overall, it was a great meet.”
Leading the Yorktown boys squad was Ethan Phillips (high jump, 5-7, third), Jiho Kim, Luke Bieber, Brendan MacDonald, and Xavier Guzman (800-meter relay, eighth, 1:38.14), Guzman (300-meter dash, 37.75, 11th), MacDonald (55-meter hurdles, 8.9, 11th), James DeMella (55-meter hurdles, 9.25, 19th), Jack Shaw (weight throw, 39-8.5, 12th) and John Quis, Aashray Vuppala, Jack Cullen, and Kyan Standford (3,200-meter relay, 9:28.29, 12th).
Amanda Linahan, Anna Dudek, Grace McCann, and Ansley Edelmann (3,200-meter relay, 11:30.36, seventh), Isabelle Ngambo (long jump, 15-10.75, seventh), Isabella Lakness (shot put, 25-0.5, 9th, weight throw, 23-11.5, 11th), Mayar Nassar (1,500-meter walk, 9:36.87, 10th), Stella Rekow, Luna Kola, Tora Larsen, and Olivia Soto (1,600-meter relay, 4:42.46, 10th), and Hannah McCann (high jump, 4-4, 13th) stood out for the Husker girls.
“The team fared well against the extremely tough competition in Westchester County,” said Yorktown coach Keith Smith. “Ninety percent of the team recorded personal best performances, so we were very happy about that. Everyone is looking forward to improving those marks at sectionals on Feb. 15.”
