Yorktown entered its rivalry contest at Somers on April 14 with a 6-0 record and knew it would need some big-time performances to stay perfect.
Sydney Sateriale (6G, 2A, 3 caused turnovers, 2 ground balls, 3 draw controls) and Ava Ryan (4G, 3A, 2 ground balls) delivered those performances in the Huskers’ 15-9 win over the Tuskers, improving to 7-0.
“It meant a lot to beat Somers and stay undefeated because they’re a big rival,” Sateriale said. “It showed how hard we’ve been working as a team and gave us even more confidence going forward.”
Yorktown entered the game as the No. 6 Class B team in the state, while Somers was an honorable mention in Class C.
“I always love playing Somers because of the heated rivalry between us,” Ryan said. “It was a super exciting win to build onto our winning record.”
Sateriale and Ryan have developed a great rapport with one another, and it showed against Somers.
“Ava and I were able to score like that because of our chemistry and teamwork, we were moving the ball well, finding open space and setting each other up for good opportunities,” Sateriale said.
Sateriale and Ryan cashed in on their chances.
“We were able to dominate on the offensive end through fast breaks and man-up opportunities,” Ryan said. “We also connect really well on attack.”
Yorktown jumped out to a 5-1 lead with 1:48 to go in the first quarter.
“We got off to a fast start by coming out with a lot of energy and focus, and it was important because it set the tone early and put pressure on them right away,” Sateriale said.
Somers then scored twice in the final 15 seconds of the opening quarter to cut the Huskers’ lead to 5-3, but Yorktown answered by outscoring Somers 5-3 in the second quarter to take a 10-6 lead at halftime.
“We possessed because our ride did a great job at getting the ball back and our defense had a lot of stops and many saves,” Ryan said.
Yorktown blanked Somers 3-0 in the third quarter to go up 13-6 at the end of the quarter.
“In the third quarter, we were able to outscore them because we stayed disciplined, played strong defense and kept our intensity up while they started to slow down,” Sateriale said.
Lily Diaz (12 draw controls, 4 caused turnovers, 7 ground balls, 1G) also had a big game for Yorktown.
“I definitely have our draw takers [Sateriale, Annie Cunneen, Khloe Clarkin] to thank for my 12 controls on the circle,” Diaz said. “We’ve been putting in the work at practice and I’m glad to see the results translate to the field.”
She added that the team is “a tight-knit group,” so “communication comes naturally, allowing them to let me know where I should be positioned to get the ball, which is also a huge advantage.”
Diaz got her 200th career draw control in a 16-11 win over visiting John Jay-Cross River on April 8.
“Accomplishing my 200th draw control felt so rewarding,” Diaz said. “Having that happen in our game against John Jay meant even more since we were playing for our former teammate, Sheridan,” Diaz said. “It was an emotional battle overall, so the accomplishment meant the world to me.”
Yorktown’s Juliet Horton (1G, 2 ground balls), Megan Durante (1G, 1A, 1 caused turnover), Gianna Boucher (1G, 1A, 2 caused turnovers, 5 ground balls), Cunneen (1G, 1A, 2 caused turnovers, 1 ground ball), Claire Sullivan (1 ground ball), Izzy Wilson (2 caused turnovers, 2 ground balls), Addison Schluter (2 caused turnovers, 1 ground ball), Riley Gross (1 caused turnover, 2 ground balls), Emma Donnelly (1 ground ball), Clarkin (2 draw controls), Anna Walling (1 ground ball), Izzy Todd (1 caused turnover, 2 ground balls) and Julia Fitzsimons (3 saves) all contributed to the win over Somers.
The Huskers will next host Nyack Thursday at 5 p.m.
