Yorktown’s Sydney Sateriale starred with a seven-point day (4G, 3A, 2 ground balls, 3 draw controls) in leading the host Huskers, the No. 10-ranked Class B team in the state poll, to a 16-7 victory against visiting Lakeland/Panas in the girls version of the Murphy Cup, which is in its second season.
It means a lot to Sateriale to win the Murphy Cup.
“Just to do it for all of our team, after having it won last year and to keep it at Yorktown is really nice, especially because the boys also won it last year,” she said.
The victory on May 9 was an important one, according to Yorktown coach Heather Raniolo.
“We got to start the tradition last year with the girls, carrying on after what [Yorktown lacrosse founder] Charlie Murphy has done for Yorktown lacrosse, so it means a lot for the girls to come together and get a big team win,” Raniolo said.
Lakeland/Panas coach Leah DiSisto feels it’s beneficial to play in a contest like the Murphy Cup.
“It’s exciting to bring the teams together for a big game like this,” DiSisto said. “It is a great experience for the girls to play in the high- intensity atmosphere.”
Lakeland/Panas’ Brooke Pizzarello, who will be playing next year at UAlbany, was grateful for the opportunity to play in the Murphy Cup.
“Having the opportunity to play in the Murphy Cup is very special especially since the guys have been playing in it (since 1990) for as long as I can remember,” Pizzarello said. “Now having the chance to play in it too is so exciting.”
Sateriale started the game’s scoring two minutes, 11 seconds into the contest with an unassisted goal.
“It was just spacing out and making sure that everyone was able to touch the ball,” Sateriale said of her goal.
Sateriale assisted on a goal by Ava Ryan (3G, 1 caused turnover, 1 draw control), which was the final goal of the opening quarter, putting the Huskers up 6-1, and they didn’t look back after that.
“We were focused on keeping big space, cutting and passing the ball, making quick movements so everyone could get the passes in the middle and make it easy to score,” Sateriale said of the Huskers’ first-quarter prowess.
Teamwork played an integral role in Sateriale’s ability to score against Lakeland/Panas.
“Most of my goals today were off of a feed from one of my teammates that were looking for me in the middle and they were always looking for the right pass, it was always there and I was able to complete it,” Sateriale said.
Sateriale credited her teammates for being in the right place for her ability to record assists.
“Everyone was spaced out and they (her teammates) knew I like to pass,” Sateriale said. “Cutting at the right time and making room for each other really helped everyone.”
Raniolo was pleased with her team’s ability to share the ball, as seven Huskers scored, with five of them registering at least two goals.
“The girls have played a pretty unselfish game, they were able to move the ball quickly and cut quickly to find our open shots,” Raniolo said.
Ella Robustelli (1G), Emma Donnelly (2A, 1 ground ball), Lily Diaz (2G, 2A, 3 caused turnovers, 3 draw controls), Khloe Clarkin (1G, 1 caused turnover, 3 draw controls), Annie Cunneen (3G, 2 caused turnovers, 6 draw controls), Claire Sullivan (1 caused turnover), Julia Fitsimons (9 saves, 1 ground ball), Izzy Todd (2G, 1 draw control) and Sam Conboy (1 save) also produced for Yorktown.
“They came out strong, I thought they played a full game,” Raniolo said. “They played hard and hustled hard.”
Pizzarello (3G, 1A, 7 draw controls) and Emma Stewart (3G) led the Rebels in scoring.
“Emma and I both were able to capitalize on our possessions and were smart when handling the ball, allowing us to get shots off,” Pizzarello said.
Gabby Goldstein (1G), Mya Wilkowski (1A), Katelyn Kuney (1 draw control), Sophia Hoffman (1 draw control), Veronica Lynch (4 saves) and Ava Canniff (3 saves) chipped in as well for Lakeland/Panas.
Yorktown (10-4) lost 13-12 in overtime at Suffern, the No. 5 team in the Class A state poll, on May 6, paced by Sateriale (3G, 1A, 1 ground ball, 2 draw controls), Ryan (6G, 1 caused turnover), Diaz (1G, 1A, 1 ground ball, 3 draw controls), Clarkin (1G, 1A, 2 ground balls), Cunneen (1G, 1A, 2 caused turnovers, 3 ground balls, 2 draw controls), Gianna Boucher (1 caused turnover, 1 ground ball), Claire Sullivan (2 caused turnovers, 2 ground balls), Izzy Wilson (1 ground ball, 1 draw control), Ella Simone (2 caused turnovers, 1 ground ball, 1 draw control) and Fitsimons (5 saves).
Lakeland/Panas (5-7) won at Pearl River 15-12 on May 6, led by Pizzarello (8G, 2A), Goldstein (4G), Emma Stewart (2G), Hoffman (2A), Brooke Stewart (1G), and Lynch (8 saves).
Yorktown’s next game will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, at home versus Pleasantville, ranked No. 3 in the Class D state poll, while the Rebels will also be at home on the same date, hosting Arlington at 5 p.m. on their senior night.
