Born in 1945, in the Bronx, New York, Richard was the son of the late Hugh Francis Johnston and Jane Ann Johnston. Growing up as the second of four brothers, he developed a lifelong passion for sports and earned a reputation as a highly talented basketball player on the local courts.

In 1965, Richard married the love of his life, Hilkka-Maija Huovinen. Together, they built a life rooted in deep devotion, partnership, and shared values. They raised their sons, Michael and Peter, in Mohegan Lake, New York, where Richard was deeply invested in his community and shared his love for youth sports by serving as a basketball coach and commissioner of the baseball PONY league associated with the Shrub Oak Athletic Club for several years. Rich was a thirty plus year member of Club Fit in Jefferson Valley, NY where he met many people who subsequently became close friends.

Over more than six decades of marriage, Richard’s devotion to Hilkka-Maija was the cornerstone of his life. In his final years, he poured his heart into personally caring for her as she battled Alzheimer’s disease, beautifully embodying the true meaning of love and commitment.

Richard dedicated his career to protecting people in his hometown. He joined the New York City Police Department (NYPD) and rose to the rank of Detective through sharp instincts and tireless dedication, serving with honor until his retirement in 2000.

Upon retiring, Richard stepped into his favorite role: grandfather. He spent the first few years of his retirement providing full-time care for his first grandchild, Daniel, forging an unbreakable, foundational bond.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Hilkka-Maija; his son, Michael, and his wife, Mary Beth; his daughter-in-law, Julie; and his cherished grandchildren, Daniel, Julia, and Kai. He also leaves behind his brothers, Thomas (Linda) of Ronkonkoma, NY, and James (Denise) of Ocean View, DE; and his sister-in-law, Maryann Johnston of Warwick, NY and several nieces and nephews. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Jane; his beloved son, Peter; and his brother, Hugh.
