A Shed the Meds event, sponsored by Assemblyman Matt Slater, is scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Yorktown Police Department.
The program, held in partnership with the Alliance for Safe Kids and Drug Crisis in Our Backyard, offers residents a safe way to dispose of unused or expired medications. Items should be placed in a clear plastic bag. Acceptable items include prescription medications, patches, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, samples and medications for pets. Needles, thermometers, inhalers, aerosol cans, ointments, lotions or liquids will not be accepted.
The event is designed to provide a convenient option for safe disposal, reduce the risk of misuse and protect the environment. Improper disposal, such as flushing medication or pouring it down the drain, can contaminate water supplies.
“Last year, we collected more than 150 pounds of medication,” Slater said in a press release sent from his office on Monday. “The event was a huge success, and it clearly shows how important this program is. I’m confident this year will be just as successful."
