The Yorktown Water District is alerting residents to scam phone calls falsely claiming that their drinking water has tested positive for toxic metals.
According to the district, residents have reported receiving calls from individuals who claim a water sample taken from their home contained high levels of lead. The callers then offer, for a fee, to retest the water.
Officials stressed that the calls are not legitimate. The Yorktown Water District, in a notice, told residents it collects and tests water samples for lead and copper every three years in compliance with the New York State and Westchester County Departments of Health Comprehensive Monitoring Plan.
The most recent testing was conducted in 2023, and all samples met federal, state, and county standards for lead and copper. The next round of testing is scheduled for 2026.
“The calls that some residents have received in this regards are in fact bogus,” the notice said.
Residents should not respond to these types of calls.
