Yorktown is joining communities across the country in recognizing October as Down Syndrome Awareness Month, celebrating individuals with Down syndrome and promoting inclusion, acceptance, and understanding throughout the community.
During the Town Board meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 21, Anna Mandara and her daughter, Gianna—who has Down syndrome and are familiar faces at local events—accepted the proclamation on behalf of families and advocates raising awareness and fostering a more inclusive Yorktown.
At that meeting, Yorktown also recognized several other October observances, including Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights; Domestic Violence Awareness Month; German American Heritage Month; and Italian American Heritage and Culture Month.
