Nicole Sibiski found value in her advocacy.
Through Keep Breathing Butterflies, Sibiski traveled to Cusco, Peru from March 27 through April 5 with a team of 13 volunteers on a service mission at ELIM Orphanage, a small, family-run home currently caring for 19 children ages 2 to 17.
During her time in Peru, she told Yorktown News that she “had the privilege of volunteering” at the Elim Orphanage, where she created “meaningful connections with the children through play, laughter, and shared experiences.”
They organized donations, played games with the children, and participated in group activities such as decorating Easter eggs and dancing. They also taught the children how to model clothing while encouraging them to build confidence and self-esteem.
“The children reminded me of the resilience of the human spirit and the power of connection,” reinforcing the mission of Keep Breathing Butterflies to “spread hope, healing, and light,” Sibiski said.
She added that another highlight was visiting Cebe Don José de San Martín, where volunteers worked with children with special needs.
The visit, she said, created “a deeper appreciation for inclusive care.”
She added that “it was an equally meaningful experience that deepened my understanding of empathy and the importance of inclusive support systems. Engaging with these incredible children and educators highlighted the beauty of every individual’s unique abilities and the impact of compassion-driven care.”
Overall, Sibiski described the journey to Peru as “one of purpose, perspective, and profound connection” and “one that will continue to inspire my work and advocacy moving forward.”
