May “Nanny” Eberhart died Wednesday, April 22, 2026, in Yorktown, New York, at the age of 96.
May was a true family matriarch whose magnetic energy and overflowing love pulled everyone together. To her family, she was Nanny, a superhero with the ability to erase fears, stress, and problems by doting on each of her kids and grandkids. A lot of times it was with food and laughter. This was a familiar interaction: “Thank you, Nanny, I can’t eat another thing.” Nanny - “OK, I’ll bring you a donut.”
May’s Mount Vernon, NY, home was a safe haven for all and seemed to epitomize her personality. Her quirky green home was always adorned with beautiful, eye-popping colors of her home-grown hydrangeas and chrysanthemums. Her flowers created a subtle, warm greeting which was followed by May’s not-so-subtle but genuinely excited ”Hi!” (You heard the exclamation point before she hugged you.)
May’s fenced-in backyard garden of tomatoes was a sense of pride that she shared with her kids and grandkids. It was a bonding area (and a home run wall that let’s say “created memories”) for her grandkids. And she always gave away the fullest, best-looking tomatoes.
May set the standard for how to live a fiery life to the fullest, like the infamous bar stool story that, according to Nanny, “isn’t much of a story.” ”It was a nice stool. I liked it. So I took it.”
That was one of the first dates May had with Bill “Poppy” Eberhart that ultimately became a 68- year marriage before Bill passed away in 2019.
May was a proud mom, grandma, and great grandma. May will be missed but never forgotten.
She’s survived by her four children Charles Eberhart, Victoria Cooper, James (Judith) Eberhart, William (Dawn) Eberhart. Cherished grandma of Kristen (Brian) Coggio, Christopher (Rebecca Gill) Eberhart, Gregory (Danielle) Cooper, Matthew Eberhart, and Stephanie Eberhart. And beloved great grandma to Brian Coggio, Andrew Coggio, Nicholas Coggio, Jack Coggio, Amelia Cooper, and newborn Carley May Cooper.
In lieu of flowers, family requests donations made to Cure Alzheimer’s Fund (https://curealz.org).
