Devoted sister of Mary Burke McQueen (George) and the late Catherine Weale (Harold) and Thomas Burke (Patricia). Treasured sister-in-law, aunt, and cousin to many in both the Burke and Mullery extended families.
Peggy was proud to have been raised in her beloved Parkchester neighborhood and St. Raymond's Parish in The Bronx. In 1961, she graduated from St. Barnabas High School, where she was a 4-year All-City basketball player and won a City Championship. She went on to graduate in 1964 from St. Vincent’s Hospital School of Nursing, where she made lifelong friends with whom she enjoyed many special gatherings and reunions over the years.
Peggy’s nursing career included decades of service at New York hospitals and as an instructor for nursing education programs through BOCES, where she made many close friends and helped shape the next generation of nurses. While working full-time, Peggy went back to school at night and earned a B.A. degree with high honors from Manhattan College in 1991. In addition to her nursing/teaching career and busy family life, Peggy coached many youth basketball teams and was an active parishioner for 53 years at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Yorktown Heights, where she served as a catechist and parent leader in the parish’s religious education program.
Peggy’s greatest joy was spending time with her family and dear friends. Her magnetic personality, generosity of spirit, thoughtfulness, hospitality, and wonderful sense of humor touched all who knew her. Peggy will be remembered for her deep faith, devotion to her family, dedication to the nursing profession, her legendary storytelling, and ability to make people laugh. She loved to host large parties, dance, dress up in costumes to lead impromptu parades, and entertain people with her stories and infectious sense of humor. Peggy was also a “superfan” of her children’s and grandchildren’s athletic teams and other activities. Her happy place was the beach in Lavallette, NJ, where she enjoyed many joyful days surrounded by family and friends. Peggy enriched all our lives with her faith, love, care for others, and sense of humor. Her loving family will continue to tell her stories, celebrate her life, and carry forward her memory and legacy. May she rest in peace.
