'One of the darkest moments' church has faced

St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Mahopac suffered severe storm damage in what pastor Fr. Szymon Kurpios called one of the worst moments of his tenure leading the parish.

MAHOPAC, N.Y.—In a Facebook post, the parish showed severe flooding in the main church caused by the severe storms that have swept through the area over the last few days.

“This afternoon has been one of the darkest moments my church has faced,” Kurpios said in a Facebook post. “The relentless rains came without mercy, and the main church of St. John the Evangelist in Mahopac suffered devastating damage from the floodwaters. What I cherish so deeply was shaken in just a matter of hours.”

Kurpios expressed his “heartfelt gratitude” and offered prayers for the community members who have already stepped up to help.

“In the midst of this trial, you came–my devoted volunteers, my courageous Mahopac Fire Department, my friends,” he said. “You stepped forward without hesitation, offering your strength, your time, and your hearts to help rescue what could be saved. Because of you, hope still stands even as the waters rose.

“I am deeply grateful to each one of you. Your compassion and bravery have been a light in this moment of darkness.

“Please continue to keep my parish in your prayers, and pray that the rain will cease tonight.”

Mahopac News has reached out for an update on the extent of the damage.
