Both Lakeland/Panas and Yorktown enjoyed success at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association qualifiers, which were held Wednesday, June 3, at Hendrick Hudson; Thursday, June 4, at Arlington; and Friday, June 5, at Suffern.

Lakeland/Panas

Lakeland/Panas coach John Benvin was proud of the effort of both his Rebel boys and girls squads at the state qualifiers in the Class A division.

“The teams had a small amount of entries in events and while nobody qualified for the NYSPHSAA championships, the athletes had a strong finish to the spring season,” Benvin said.

For the Rebel boys, junior Steve Sandoval finished second (143 feet, 7 inches) in the hammer throw. Sophomores Alex Araujo and Nate Pawell finished fourth (116 feet) and ninth (78-9), respectively, in the same event.

Senior Gianni Simpson finished third (22-11) in the long jump and senior Dylan Young placed second (12 feet) in the pole vault.

Junior Chase Bennett finished 11th (1:02.49) in the 400-meter hurdles while junior Billy Pike placed seventh (11:05.20) in the 3K steeplechase.

The 4x800 relay team of Pike, senior Nischal Grabe, sophomore Ian Mejia and freshman Gideon Eduful was fifth (8:30.60).

For the Rebel girls, junior Naomi Edwards got the three-day meet off with a third-place finish (118-8) in the hammer throw. Sophomores Cecilia Garcia (fifth, 96-2) and Ashley Oubina (ninth, 70-11) also competed in the hammer throw.

Sophomore Ayah Abreu and freshman Dani Tavarez finished fifth (10:33.33) and sixth (10:52.47) in the 1,500-meter racewalk.

Junior Riley Scott and sophomore Jaelynn Chelley both ran the 100-meter dash, finishing ninth (13.11) and 12th (13.12). Scott would also finish fifth (26.28) in the 200-meter dash with Chelley scoring a fourth-place finish  (59.34) in the 400-meter dash.

Juniors Cassidy Dineen-Herzog and Margaret Keating finished fifth (11:09.14) and eighth (11:30.29) in the 3,000-meter run. Keating also ran the 2K steeplechase and finished fourth (7:53.21).

Sophomore Mia Aquart finished eighth (34-4.5) in the triple jump while the 4x400 relay team of Scott, Chelley, sophomore Aaliyah Thomas and sophomore Brianna Burdett placed fifth (4:09.56).

Benvin was pleased with how everyone on both Rebel teams finished the spring season.

“We had a few last-minute injuries that limited the number of athletes we sent to the qualifiers but those that competed did very well with quite a few finishing just short of making it to states,” Benvin said. “The entire season was a great one from day one until this last weekend. It’s sad to say goodbye to the seniors who helped bring the teams much success but excited for next year to see those returning improve and seek new goals to accomplish.”

 Yorktown

Yorktown competed in the Class B division at the state qualifier, with Isabella Lakness (discus, second, 84-2, shot put, sixth, 26-10.5), Olivia Baumann (high jump, sixth, 4-3), Amanda Linahan (200-meter dash, seventh, 28.02), Isabelle Ngambo (long jump, seventh, 13-8), Keilana Kim (pentathlon, seventh, 1,337 points), Adhra Bajrami (400-meter hurdles, ninth, 75.13), Mary Cabral (400-meter hurdles, tenth, 75.98), Anna Dudek (2,000-meter steeplechase, 12th, 9:06.73) and the 3,200-meter relay of Dudek, Ansley Edelmann, Breese McAuliffe and Grace McCann (seventh, 10:47.47) standing out for the Husker girls.

Shining for the Yorktown boys were Jack Shaw (discus, fourth, 124-9), Ethan Phillips (high jump, sixth, 5-10), William Gorman (100-meter dash, ninth, 11.45) and Jiho Kim (200-meter dash, 12th, 23.61).

“The teams ended their season on a very high and promising note,” said Yorktown coach Keith Smith. “Most of our athletes had personal records at their final meet of the season, which is the best way to end up. I was extremely proud of the athletes and especially to our seniors who completed their high-school career.”
