The Hornets’ long streak at the top of Section 1 came to an end the day before Halloween with a semifinal loss. The defeat came after a strong showing in the quarterfinal. Here’s how things unfolded.

Lakeland 9, Pelham 1

Tuesday, Oct. 28, Lakeland High School

Gianna Santini (4G, 1A), Meaghan Heyde (1G, 5A), Aditi Parambath (1G, 1A), Gabby Goldstein (1G, 1A), Allie Waters (1G), Madison Wohlberg (1G), and Jenna Yazzetti (1 save) propelled No. 2 Lakeland to a 9-1 victory against No. 7 Pelham in the quarterfinals of the Section 1 Class B Tournament.

Lakeland won the game by dominating the second and third quarters, outscoring Pelham 7-0 after taking a 1-0 lead at the end of the opening stanza.

“After the first quarter, we made some necessary adjustments, especially on corners, which got our offense going strong, leading us to score more goals in the second and third quarters,” Santini said.

Greeley 2, Lakeland 0

Thursday, Oct. 30, Lakeland High School

No. 3 Horace Greeley defeated Lakeland 2-0 in the semifinals of the tournament, ending the Hornets’ historic streak of Section 1 Class B championships.

Lakeland had won 15 consecutive Class B sectional titles, in addition to winning the Putnam-Northern Westchester Regional Small School Tournament in 2020, which was held in lieu of the sectional tournament because of the pandemic.

The last time Lakeland didn’t win the Section 1 Class B Tournament when it was held was in 2008, when it lost to Putnam Valley 3-2 on Nov. 1 of that year in the tournament’s title game.

In that stretch, Lakeland also won nine straight state Class B titles from 2009-2017, in addition to winning another state Class B crown in 2019.

Greeley’s Phoebe Warshaw tallied a goal off a penalty corner 57 seconds into the game to put the Quakers up 1-0 before teammate Nicole Weyne doubled the visitors’ advantage to 2-0 in the third quarter for the game’s scoring.

Yazzetti tallied five saves in goal for the Hornets.

It was the third year in a row the two teams met in the postseason, with Lakeland beating Greeley in two Section 1 Class B title games at Lakeland, winning 1-0 in 2023 and 2-1 in a penalty shootout after a scoreless regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods in 2024.

The two teams also met during the regular season at Greeley, playing to a 0-0 tie on Sept. 15.
