LHS beats Peekskill in soccer sectionals

Yorktown's Cusack nets OT playoff winner

Friday, Oct. 24, Lakeland High School

No. 5 Lakeland won its eighth game in a row with a 2-1 victory against No. 12 Peekskill in the first round of the Section 1 Class AA Tournament.

“It feels great to start sectionals with a win,” said Lakeland’s Vinny Karaqi. “We’ve played Peekskill a few times this season (Hornets have a 3-0 record against the Red Devils), and they came out strong today—definitely tougher than before. Even though the score was close, it showed how much we’ve all grown and how important it is to keep fighting for every game in the playoffs untill the last second.”

Karaqi scored, with an assist from Owen Becker, to put Lakeland up 1-0 with 7:48 to go in the first half. Matteo DiLaura added a goal to give the Hornets a 2-0 advantage six and a half minutes into the second half.

Peekskill scored to cut the Hornets’ lead in half with 14:24 to go in the game, but despite a few good attempts, couldn’t get the equalizer.

Mason Eynon recorded 5 saves for Lakeland.

Lakeland 5, Brewster 1

Monday, Oct. 20, Lakeland High School

Lakeland won against Brewster 5-1 on its senior night, with seniors Becker (captain), Lucas Boyko (captain), Joe Delionado, Aldo DiLaura, Thomas Jorge, Connor Joy, Karaqi, Jonathan Lage (captain), Lucas Paljusevic, Nico Paljusevic, and Connor Walluk honored before the game.

Karaqi (1G, 2A), Luke Gomes (1G, 1A), Becker (1G), Joy (1G), Zane Eynon (1G), Nick Ahmataj (1A), Nico Paljusevic (1A), and Mason Eynon (6 saves) produced for the Hornets versus the Bears.

Yorktown Boys Soccer (7-6-4)

Yorktown 2, Ossining 1 (OT)

Friday, Oct. 24, Ossining High School

Senior Gavin Cusack (2G) scored with six seconds left in overtime to give No. 9 Yorktown an exhilarating 2-1 victory against No. 8 Ossining in the opening round of the Section 1 Class AA Tournament.

“The whole team was motivating each other as we knew that our high-school careers were on the line,” Cusack said. “Lucas Flores (1A) made a sprint with the ball down the line with 10 seconds left and crossed the ball into the box. I was able to get my head on it and win the game for my team. That feeling when I scored is unbeatable. I am very grateful that my team and I are able to play together again.”

Haniel Flores (1A) and Antonio Spiniello (7 saves) also contributed to the win.

Yorktown Field Hockey (13-4)

Yorktown 7, Harrison 0

Saturday, Oct. 25, Yorktown High School

No. 5 Yorktown defeated No. 12 Harrison 7-0 in the opening round of the Section 1 Class B Tournament.

Doing the job offensively for the Huskers were Anna Burns (3G), Serena Zimmerman (2G, 1A), Riley Grieve (2G, 1A), and Emma Donnelly, Ava Ryan, Adriana Torrieri, Annie Cunneen, and Megan Durante, who all recorded 1 assist each.

“Getting a hat trick in the sectionals meant a lot, but it was all about the team,” Burns said. “It reflects the effort of our entire team. It shows how strong we are as a team and how connected we are. This win shows our growth as a team and prepares us for further section games.”

Sam Conboy registered 4 saves in goal for Yorktown.

Yorktown 7, Panas 0

Monday, Oct. 20, Walter Panas High School

Gabby Coppola (2G), Grieve (2G), Lily Diaz (1G, 1A), Zimmerman (1G), Donnelly (first varsity goal), Ryan (1A), Durante (2A), and Conboy (1 save) led Yorktown to a 7-0 win against Walter Panas in its regular-season finale.

Lakeland Field Hockey (11-3-2)

Lakeland 3, John Jay-EF 2

Tuesday, Oct. 21, John Jay-East Fishkill High School

Aditi Parambath (2A), Gianna Santini (1G), Victoria Myniv (1G),

Gabby Goldstein (1G), and Jenna Yazzetti (7 saves) propelled Lakeland to a 3-2 victory against John Jay-East Fishkill (12-3-1).

“It (the win) meant a lot to our team,” Parambath said. “Ending our season on a good note was very important to us. The team we played was a skilled team and never gave up, which pushed us to play even harder than we expected. It meant we could all be smiles for the rest of the week but also as it comes closer to game time during postseason, we got to put on a serious face. But it was definitely a great game and a great way to end the regular season.”

Lakeland earned the No. 2 seed and a bye in the opening round of the Section 1 Class B Tournament. The Hornets were scheduled to host the winner of No. 7 Pelham and No. 10 Somers in the quarterfinals on Oct. 28.

Lakeland Girls Volleyball (17-1)

Lakeland 3, Putnam Valley 1

Tuesday, Oct. 21, Putnam Valley High School

Lakeland defeated Putnam Valley 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-23, 25-20), paced by Kelly Mallon (26 digs, 17 kills), Sofia Cruz (23 kills, 10 assists), Lynae Petrosino (35 assists), Caelyn Faison (7 kills, 4 blocks), and Mia Aquart (4 kills, 6 digs).

Thursday, Oct. 23, Carmel High School

Lakeland earned a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-19) triumph against Carmel, led by Cruz (12 kills, 12 assists, 6 digs), Mallon (8 digs, 18 kills), Faison (8 kills, 2 blocks), Petrosino (20 assists), Ava Hoff (4 kills), and Taryn Bruno (7 digs).

“Finishing the (regular) season with a win was amazing,” Mallon said. “We all showed so much grit and determination this season and it’s so great to see our improvement from the beginning ’til now.” 

Yorktown Girls Volleyball (10-7)

Yorktown 3, Ardsley 2

Tuesday, Oct. 21, Ardsley High School

Natalia Lyon (24 digs, 19 kills, 2 blocks, 4 aces, 3 assists), Kaitlyn Riordan (10 digs, 2 aces), Mia Riordan (6 digs, 4 aces, 25 assists), Haley Allen (19 digs, 1 kill, 2 aces, 3 assists), Emma McCoy (5 digs, 15 kills, 1 block), Kailey Alexander (10 kills, 4 blocks), and Izzy Schaeffer (4 digs, 4 aces, 17 assists) ignited Yorktown to a 3-2 (17-25, 27-25, 25-21, 20-25, 17-15) win against Ardsley, which entered the match 13-2.

“The win against Ardsley meant a lot to my team because they’re competitive, which motivated us to work even harder for the win,” Lyon said.

Thursday, Oct. 23, Yorktown High School

Yorktown won its final regular-season match against Brewster 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-12), with Allen (18 digs), Alexander (11 kills, 4 blocks), Mia Riordan (3 aces), and Schaeffer (18 assists) leading the Huskers in the aforementioned categories.

Monday, Oct. 20, Yorktown High School

Yorktown lost to Clarkstown South 3-2 (19-25, 14-25, 25-21, 25-23, 11-15), led by Justin Sek (22 kills), Franklin Ringel (15 kills), and Hudson Novak (10 digs).

Thursday, Oct. 23, Fox Lane High School

The Huskers were victorious against Fox Lane 3-0 (25-16, 25-20, 25-19), with Jack Brunner (3 aces, 35 assists), Sek (4 aces, 5 digs, 20 kills), and Sid Senoy (7 kills, 5 blocks) doing the honors for Yorktown.

“After a rough weekend of losses we knew we had to come out strong and bring it to Fox Lane,” Sek said. “We created our own energy and I think that was the key to coming away with it (the win).”

Yorktown won against Ossining 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-13), ignited by

Sek (28 assists), Xavier Guzman (10 kills, 2 blocks), and Senoy (10 kills, 5 assists, 5 blocks).

The Hornets swept Carmel 3-0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-15), paced by Kenny Bui (8 kills, 1 ace), Addison Cuevas (4 kills, 3 blocks), Van Bui (17 assists), and Logan Tolve (4 kills, 3 aces).

Friday, Oct. 24, Lakeland High School

Lakeland won against Somers on its senior night 3-1 (25-27, 25-12, 25-16, 25-15), led by Kevin Dominic (19 kills), Kenny Bui (9 kills, 3 assists), Cuevas (9 kills, 2 aces), Erdin Dedushaj (4 kills, 2 blocks),

Van Bui (21 assists, 2 kills), Delvin Anthony (17 assists, 1 kill, 2 blocks), and Shane Gorman (9 service points, 5 digs).

“It proves to not only others but myself that we can win when it matters most, when friends and family are there for you,” said Kenny Bui.

Kenny Bui, Anthony, Cuevas, and Gorman were the seniors honored before the match.

Lakeland Football (3-5)

Somers 51, Lakeland 13

Friday, Oct. 24, Lakeland High School

Lakeland lost to Somers, winners of the last three state Class A titles and the No. 3 ranked Class A team in the state, 51-13.

Joe LaPeruta (2 touchdown passes), Ben Franco (2 receptions, 40 yards, touchdown), and Anthony Ray (5 receptions, 110 yards, touchdown) led the Hornets in their regular-season finale.

Lakeland’s next game was scheduled at John Jay-Cross River at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29 in a non-playoff contest.
