Nicole Mautone (2-3, single, triple, one run), Arianna DeEsso (one RBI), Jenna Yazzetti (2-3, 2 singles, 1 walk) and Jaclyn Gu (1 RBI) powered the offense in Lakeland’s 4-2 victory against Putnam Valley in the regular-season finale for the Hornets.

Mautone earned the win on the mound, striking out eight.

Lakeland 13, Roosevelt 0 (5 innings)

Friday, May 22, Lakeland High School

Mautone threw a no-hitter in No. 6 Lakeland’s 13-0 victory against No. 11 Roosevelt in the opening round of the Section 1 Class AA Tournament.

“It meant a lot to win it (her final home game), to get a good team win,” said Mautone, a senior. “We got runs early. We had a lot of energy in the dugout, which helped us get an early lead. It was a good win overall.”

Mautone struck out 12 and walked one in a game that ended in the fifth inning because of the mercy rule.

“I was able to hit my spots,” she said. “All my pitches were working. My teammates were supporting me in the dugout.”

Lakeland jumped out to a 2-0 first-inning lead on an inside-the-park home run to right field by Liliana Aguirre (2-3, 2 runs, 2 RBIs, single) and a home run well beyond the left-field fence by Mautone (2-2, 3 runs, RBI, double, walk).

“I came up there thinking just to be patient and wait for my pitch,” Mautone said of her home run.

Gianna Santini led off the second inning with a single, stole two bases and scored on a sacrifice fly to left field by Aguirre, increasing Lakeland’s lead to 3-0.

“I’m so happy and it’s a great win that we mercy-ed to,” said Santini, a junior. “It’s been awhile since we got a mercy win so I’m so proud of the team. I am so happy that we can go forward even though I’m going to miss this field but we’ll have next year to play on it.”

Santini (3-3, 2 runs, 3 singles) had a big day at the plate.

“I felt I was very patient and I was looking for the right pitch,” Santini said. “I was like, I don’t want a high ball, I was waiting right for the straight ball and I got it.”

Mautone led off with a double to start a four-run third inning for Lakeland, extending its lead to 7-0.“I just wanted to get the bat out and make some contact,” Mautone said.

Lakeland sealed the win with six more runs in the fourth inning.

“We were able to hit in the later innings because we were more used to the pitcher and her pitches,” Santini said. “We were very patient, we were listening to our coaches (head coach Danielle Fiore and assistant coach Nicole Verrino) and we put our bats on the ball. Especially our energy, it really boosted us up to play better and hit the ball, which we did.”

DeEsso (2-3, 1 run, RBI, 2 doubles), Yazzetti (1-2, run, RBI, single), Jenna Taylor (1-1, RBI, double, walk) and Taryn Bruno (1-3, run, RBI, walk) also produced for the Hornets against Roosevelt.

Yorktown Softball (14-7)

Yorktown 17, Rye 7

Friday, May 22, Yorktown High School

Leading 7-6, No. 3 Yorktown broke the game open with seven runs in the fifth inning, propelling it to a 17-7 victory against No. 14 Rye in the first round of the Section 1 Class AA Tournament.

“The biggest key was everyone staying locked in and passing the bat,” said Yorktown’s Nina Fasce of the Huskers’ seven-run outburst. “We were able to really translate and hone in on what we worked on in practice yesterday, especially our approach at the plate. Once we started putting together quality at bats, the energy shifted and we kept building momentum off each other.”

Fasce (3-4, 4 runs, 5 RBIs, walk) was one of the reasons Yorktown came away with the win.

“It felt great to contribute to our win especially in a sectional game,” Fasce said.

Kaitlyn Horn (3-3, double, 4 runs, 1 RBI, 2 walks), Katie Egan (2-4, 4 runs, 2 RBIs, 1 walk, 1 stolen base) and Alicia Cinicolo (3-4, double, 1 run, 2 RBIs, walk) also had multi-hit games for the Huskers, supporting winning pitcher Kate Brown (7 innings, 3 earned runs, 3 walks, 6 strikeouts, 3 caught looking).

Yorktown will next host Lakeland at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, in a quarterfinal contest.

Friday, May 22, in Mahopac Falls Field

Chris Lanza (2-3, double, 2 RBI) helped the Huskers secure the win.

“It was a surreal feeling to contribute to this Yorktown win against a big rival in such an important game,” Lanza said. “It was truly a team effort with everyone contributing, especially our pitching staff that gave seven dominant innings. Looking forward to taking the field again with the boys on Tuesday for our next playoff game.”

Brandon Manchess (2-3, run, walk), Swaraaj Pujari (2-3, walk), Xavier Guzman (1-3, stolen base), Luke Ciamei (RBI), Alex Ornstein (run), Lirim Biberaj (1 run, 2 walks) and Nick Santelli (stolen base) also produced offensively for the Huskers.

Starting pitcher Liam O’Connor (3 innings, 1 hit, 0 earned runs, 1 strikeout) picked up the win and Jake Sgobbo (3.2 innings, 1 hit, 0 earned runs, 2 strikeouts) earned the save.

Jack Falk pitched one-third of an inning in between.

“It felt great to be able to pitch in that spot and coach (C.J.) Riefenhauser having the trust in me to do so,” Sgobbo said.  “It started with O’Connor giving us a great start to the game. This was overall an amazing feeling and a great team win. My trust in my team is what enabled me to do so, we have an amazing defense behind me and I trust every one of those guys.”

Sgobbo is a sophomore who is appreciative of the opportunities he receives.

“I am blessed to be able to contribute to this team at a young age,” Sgobbo said.

Yorktown will travel to face top-seeded Rye, the No. 16-ranked Class AA team in the state, at Disbrow Park in a double-elimination winners bracket game at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 26.
