Lakeland and Walter Panas high school students appeared as ex officio student board members during the Lakeland Board of Education meeting Sept. 18 and will continue highlighting programs and events throughout the school year.

Lakeland High School students Patrick Harkins and Winter Wilbright serve as their school’s student board representatives, with Hailey Nazario as an alternate. Emily Diaz and Anvi Kumar play the same role for Panas, with Patricia Peleyo as an alternate.

During the meeting, the students shared insights and perspectives on school programs with the board and are expected to present before the board regularly.

Harkins told the board the school year was off to “a very smooth start,” with activities such as debate club, drama, and the pre-med club drawing a lot of interest. He said the school looks forward to welcoming students into its new Media Center, set to open Oct. 10. Harkins also acknowledged Lakeland’s two National Merit Scholarship semifinalists, Justine Tang and Sean Kowatch.

Wilbright praised the early-season success of the sports teams and highlighted the Senior Formal, set for Oct. 30 at Putnam County Golf Course in Mahopac, calling it “a special celebration for the class of 2026.” She added that she looks forward to sharing updates with the community in the months to come.
