Westchester County Championships

Friday, May 15, Somers High School and Saturday, May 16, Hendrick Hudson High School

Lakeland/Panas’ boys won the Class A county championship, finishing fifth overall and edging league rival Horace Greeley for the title, while its girls finished 20th in a field of more than 42 schools.

Senior Gianni Simpson (first, 400-meter dash, 50.45 seconds; third, long jump, 22 feet, 7 inches), senior Adonis Vega (fourth, 400-meter dash, 51.15), junior Gio Simpson, Gianni’s brother (seventh, 400-meter run, 51.53), senior Geo Pena (10th, 110-meter hurdles, 16.81), sophomore Dominick Burello (sixth, 3,000-meter steeplechase, 10:20.20), junior Steve Sandoval (sixth, hammer throw, 139-8), junior Julian Davidson (fifth, high jump, 5-6), sophomore Brian Godfrey (ninth, javelin throw, 112-1) and senior Dylan Young (10th, pole vault, 10-6) led the Rebel boys.

In relays, senior Nischal Grabe, junior Billy Pike, sophomore Ian Mejia and freshman Gideon Eduful placed sixth in the 4x800-meter relay in 8:34.51; junior Cody Jackson, sophomore Adonis Garcia and seniors Jack Doherty and Declan Fleming finished ninth in the 4x100-meter relay in 44.57; and junior Bryant Galiber, Vega and both Simpsons won the 4x400-meter relay in 3:24.56, a top-18 time in the state.

“This group of seniors were on a mission since August to bring home the hardware in every season,” said Lakeland/Panas coach John Benvin. “League titles in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track a few weeks ago, winning the Inaugural Westlake Wildcat  Invitational this year and now a top five overall finish in counties with the Class A title to go with it.”

Benvin added that “it’s easily the best season the boys squad has had in quite a few years and we still have Class A sectionals and state qualifiers to go.”

For the Rebel girls, junior Naomi Edwards (sixth, discus throw, 87 feet; fifth, hammer throw, 104-7), sophomores Cecilia Garcia (sixth, hammer throw, 93-4) and Ashley Oubina (eighth, hammer throw, 77-3), senior Deja Farquharson (eighth, discus throw, 77-7), junior Caelyn Faison (fifth, high jump, 4-9), sophomore Lei Guarin (seventh, pole vault, 6-6) and sophomore Ayah Abreu (ninth, 1,500-meter race walk, 11:05.16) excelled in their respective events.

Also excelling for the Rebel girls were junior Margaret Keating (seventh, 3,000-meter run, 10:53.22; third, 2,000-meter steeplechase, 7:46.90), junior Riley Scott (10th, 200-meter dash, 26.26), sophomore Jaelynn Chelley (eighth, 400-meter run, 1:00.16; seventh, 100-meter dash, 12.87) and Scott, Chelley, sophomore Aaliyah Thomas and junior Ondine Gourdon-Luckenbill (sixth, 4x400-meter relay, 4:10.52).

“As for the girls the talented, but youthful side of the squad showed,” Benvin said. “Winning leagues a few weeks ago motivated them to train hard and the results were showing (many personal bests over the last few days) but not many finishes in the top 10. But not many seniors are graduating on the Lady Rebel side so this group will improve and come back next year, looking to be as successful as the boys are this year.”

For Yorktown, Anna Dudek (seventh, steeplechase, 8:11.6), Dudek, Dharma Bernales, Breese McAuliffe and Grace McCann (seventh, 3,200-meter relay, 10:59.65), Adhra Bajrami (eighth, 400-meter hurdles, 1:15.82), Isabelle Ngambo (ninth, long jump, 16-0.25), Keilana Kim (ninth, pentathlon, 1,014 points), Mayar Nassar (10th, 1,500-meter race walk, 11:05.61), Isabella Lakness (11th, shot put, 27-2.5) and Avani Stanford, Mia Bevilacqua, Amanda Linahan and Ngambo (11th, 400-meter relay, 53.59) stood out for the girls, while Jack Shaw (eighth, hammer throw, 131-8; 14th, discus throw, 102-10) did so for the boys.

“The team had a fine showing at the Westchester County Championships,” said Yorktown coach Keith Smith. “Many of our young athletes really stepped up and performed very well. Westchester is a very competitive county and I was very pleased with how well that we did.”

Our strategy has changed, which is hit and score earlier in the game, so we can have a more competitive game with our opponents.”
