Lakeland Middle Schoolers donate pillows to breast cancer patients

SHRUB OAK, N.Y. –  Eighth graders at Lakeland Copper Beech Middle School are helping breast cancer patients in Westchester County—one stitch at a time.

The students recently delivered handmade heart-shaped pillows designed to provide comfort and physical support to more than 250 breast cancer patients at White Plains Hospital Center for Cancer Care. During their April 22 visit, the students learned firsthand how patients are cared for, from initial testing through ongoing treatment.

They met with doctors, nurses, and other key staff who support the patients, and shared their own sewing process during the presentation, noting each pillow comes with a handmade card.

Copper Beech’s family and consumer science classes started making the pillows last fall after learning directly from a nurse and breast cancer survivor, Angela Nastasi, B.S.N., C.C.R.N., about the pillows' impact. Several students said hearing Nastasi’s experiences was one of their favorite parts of the project, and many expressed gratitude for the chance to make a difference.

The sewing process included cutting out patterns, ironing and pinning fabric, adding straps, stuffing the pillows, and stitching them closed.

“I have learned so much throughout this entire process and am so grateful that I was able to help make these pillows for people who really need them,” one student said during the presentation. “I have so much respect for the people who have to go through this, and I am happy that I get to take a bit of their pain away.”
