Lakeland 62, Somers 36 

Monday, Feb. 9, Lakeland High School 

Riley Waters (23 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals), Liliana Aguirre (15 points, 10 rebounds), Carina Cannizzaro (7 points, 4 rebounds), Allie Waters (6 points, 3 rebounds, 3 steals), Alyssa Traille (5 points), Sam Alleva (3 points), Emma Burke (2 points) and Emily Hahn (1 point, 7 rebounds) propelled Lakeland to a 62-36 triumph against Somers.  

“The energy from all of the little Hornets who came and supported us pushed me to play extra hard,” said Riley Waters, of her great all-around performance. “They were very excited about the game, and I wanted to make them proud because they are the future of Lakeland basketball.”  

Lakeland 60, Greeley 38 

Wednesday, Feb. 11, Horace Greeley High School 

Lakeland defeated Horace Greeley 60-38, with Aguirre (17 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals), Adriana Ar-Bab (11 points, 2 assists), Riley Waters (10 points, 4 assists, 7 steals), Cannizzaro (7 points, 4 rebounds), Allie Waters (6 points, 2 assists, 3 steals), Hahn (3 points, 3 rebounds), Burke (2 points, 2 assists), Theryn Rader (2 points), and Lily Bauer (2 points) leading the Hornets to victory.  

Lakeland 38, Pleasantville 36 

Friday, Feb. 13, Lakeland High School  

Lakeland defeated Pleasantville 38-36 on its senior night, winning its third game in a row and fourth in the last five contests. 

Aguirre (13 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals), Riley Waters (12 points, 3 assists), Cannizzaro (4 points, 8 rebounds), Hahn (4 points, 3 rebounds), Allie Waters (2 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals) and Emma Burke (3 points) produced for the Hornets against the Panthers.  

Hahn and Alleva were the seniors honored before the game.  

Yorktown Girls Basketball (8-11) 

Yorktown 42, Harrison 30 

Wednesday, Feb. 11, Yorktown High School 

Addison Schluter (16 points), Erin Duffy (15 points) and Reilly Acosta (11 points) paced Yorktown in its 42-30 win over Harrison.  

“We were able to pull away with this win because of our defense. Even when things weren’t going our way offensively, we put all our efforts into defense, and I really think that’s what made us win,” Schluter said.  

Yorktown 54, Panas 32 

Saturday, Feb. 14, Yorktown High School 

Yorktown jumped out to a 9-0 lead and maintained its advantage throughout the game, leading 31-22 at halftime, 42-31 at the end of the third quarter, en route to a 54-32 win against Walter Panas, led by Acosta (16 points) and Duffy (8 points).  

Both Yorktown and Lakeland will compete in the Section 1 Class AA Tournament, which begins with the out-bracket on Thursday, Feb. 19 and opening round, Saturday, Feb. 21. 

The seeding meeting for the tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 17.  

BYSNS Ice Hockey (13-3) 

BYSNS 9, Carmel 4 

Friday, Feb. 13, Brewster Ice Arena 

BYSNS (Brewster/Yorktown/Somers/North Salem) defeated Carmel 9-4 on its senior night and in the process clinched the Section 1 League B title, its first league title since the four schools combined to play together during the 2019-2020 season.  

Ryan Dean (alternate captain), Ryan Sandhop, Greg Marotta, Paul Rienzi, Lucas Salvatore (captain), James Munoz (captain), Patrick Vaughn, Brady Janec and Jordan Millar (captain) were the seniors honored before the game, one that started with BYSNS leading 4-0 at the end of the opening period.  

“It means everything to me and our team to clinch the league title as it is the first one in program history,” Dean said. “Our team has had a great season, and I think winning the league title just makes it even better.” 

Salvatore (4G, 2A), Henry Rossi (2G, 1A), Rilind Berisha (3A), Munoz (1G, 1A), Dean (1G), Sandhop (1G), Keiran Ryan (1A), Millar (1A), and Vaughn (31 saves) did the job for the Bisons in their final regular season home game.  

“It (winning the league) means so much to the players and the coaching staff,” said BYSNS coach Ryan Langkafel. “It was one of the goals we set out to achieve this year, and it’s a very rewarding goal. Obtaining the league championship rewards our hard work and success over the course of the season, playing great teams and competing every game.  

“I’m so proud of the players, especially the seniors and our captains who led the way. They are a very experienced and talented group who took pride in playing our style of hockey. They were all so committed and sacrificed so much I couldn’t be happier for them to have made history with this team.” 

Cortlandt Ice Hockey (8-11-1) 

Cortlandt 3, Fox Lane 1 

Friday, Feb. 13, Brewster Ice Arena 

Stephen Kjartsansson (1G), Joseph Recuppio (1G), Hudson Tarkington (1G), Anthony Costa (1A), Christian Waugh (1A), and Brandon  

Di Benedetto (23 saves) helped the Rebels overcome an early 1-0 deficit to record a 3-1 victory against Fox Lane. 

“It was our eighth win. We started the season 3-8, so I’m very proud of this group, in the way it rebounded,” said Cortlandt coach Bart Mucci.  

Byram Hills 5, Cortlandt 2 

Saturday, Feb. 14, Brewster Ice Arena 

Cortlandt’s regular season ended with a 5-2 loss to Byram Hills, led by Kjartansson (2G), Aiden Rau (1A), Nate Herbert (1A), and Di Benedetto (23 saves). 

“It was [a] great effort in a tough loss,” Mucci said. 

Both Cortlandt and BYSNS will play in the Section 1 Division 1 Tournament, with the opening round of the tourney being played on Thursday, Feb. 19. The seeding meeting for the tournament is scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 17.  

Boys and Girls Track and Field   

Section 1 Championships 

Sunday, Feb. 15, The Armory Track and Field Center, NYC 

Yorktown and Lakeland/Panas both took part in the Section 1 championships. 

Yorktown competed in Class B, with the 800-meter relay (fifth place, 1:38.37) of Jiho Kim, Luke Biemer Brendan MacDonald and Xavier Guzman, Jack Shaw (weight throw, sixth, 41 feet, 2 inches), Guzman (300-meter dash, eighth, 37.49 seconds), Kim (55-meter dash, ninth, 6.89) and MacDonald (55-meter hurdles, 11th, 8.89) standing out for the Husker boys squad.  

On the girls’ side for Yorktown, top performers included Isabelle Ngambo, who placed third in the long jump (15-7.75); the 3,200-meter relay team of Grace McCann, Anna Dudek, Mary Cabral, and Ansley Edelmann, which finished sixth (10:57.53); the 1,600-meter relay team of Skye Soto, Luna Kola, Amanda Linahan, and Adhra Bajrami, which placed seventh (4:40.11); the 800-meter relay team of Linahan, Mia Bevilacqua, Bajrami, and Ngambo, also seventh (1:59.81); and Isabella Lakness, who was eighth in the weight throw (24-7). 

“The team did very well at Class B championships,” said Yorktown coach Keith Smith. “We have a young team, and they stepped up having some of their best performances of the season. It was a great way to finish off the season.” 

Lakeland/Panas competed in Class AA, with the boys finishing eighth place and the girls ninth. 

“It was a super competitive meet,” said Lakeland/Panas coach John Benvin. “Both teams came off a great showing at the County championships and for most of the athletes this was the final meet of the indoor season, with only a few moving on to the state qualifier meet on Feb. 22.” 
For the Rebel boys, senior Dylan Young won the pole vault (10-6) while senior Gianni Simpson was the victor the long jump (21-9.25). Simpson also took fourth in the 300-meter run (35.53).    

His brother, junior Giordano Simpson, placed fourth in the 600-meter run (1:27.59) while junior Steve Sandoval finished sixth in the weight throw (44-11.75). Junior Billy Pike placed ninth in the 1,600-meter run (4:48.75).  

Freshman Gideon Edeful ran 10:37.40 in the 3,200-meter run to finish eighth. Junior Dan Flannery placed ninth in the long jump (18-3.5).  Senior Nischal Grabe finished the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:45.74, to take home 10th place.   

The 4x800-meter relay team of Edeful, Pike, Grabe and sophomore Ian Mejia placed fifth (9:15.74).  
For the Rebel girls, junior Naomi Edwards made her return to the weight-throw competition after being out a month because of a knee injury. Her seventh-place finish of 36-8 included two personal record throws. 

“She led a young group of female athletes to a respectable finish against some big powerhouse programs,” Benvin said. 

Junior Maleyah Nieves finished seventh in the triple jump (28-11) and 10th in the high hurdles (10.45). Sophomore Aaliyah Thomas finished fourth in the 600-meter run (1:44.06).  

Sophomore Eden Picardi placed fifth in the racewalk (9:48.65) while sophomore Brianna Burdett finished 10th in the 600-meter run (1:51.24). The 4x800-meter relay of Picardi, junior Margaret Keating, junior Liza Gjokiq and Burdett ran to a third-place finish (11:07.06).  
“We brought a small group to the sectional championships and against some large teams and a tremendous pool of talent, both our Lady Rebels and boys teams took home top 10 finishes,” Benvin said. “Some seniors competed great in what may be their last races ever for the indoor team. For others they were among the newer faces and less experienced athletes, but they all did very well and surpassed expectations.   

“It’ll be a few days before the state qualifiers list is posted and from that we’ll see who advances on for the indoor state championship qualifier meet. Everyone else can take the upcoming February break to recharge their batteries and start preparing for the outdoor season that officially begins in about three weeks.” 

Girls and Boys Bowling 

Section 1 Division 1 Championships 

Monday, Feb. 9, Tuesday, Feb. 10, Fishkill Bowl 

Yorktown’s Kayla DiSanzo bowled at the girls’ Section 1 Division 1 championships, going 170, 135, 134, for a 439 in the morning session before registering a 115, 114, 130, for a 359 in the afternoon, totaling 798 on Feb. 9.  

Lakeland’s Vinny Benedetto competed in the boys’ Division 1 bracket, bowling 195, 140, 216 for a 551 in the first half, before 176, 133, 137 for a 446 in the second half for a grand total of 997 on Feb. 10.
