The Yorktown Town Board is considering a proposed local law that would increase fines for parking in fire lanes and handicapped spaces from $50 and $100 to $100 and $150.
Supervisor Ed Lachterman said the higher fines are intended as a safety measure and that Yorktown’s fines “are probably the lowest in the area.”
Councilman Sergio Esposito, who is running for state Senate, expressed concern about the size of the increase and its impact on residents. Esposito also said fines should be established for parking in designated veterans’ zones.
Any enforcement of fines for veterans’ parking spaces would depend on whether such designations are formally established under local law.
The proposal comes after the hiring of new code enforcement officers, who have issued about 90 tickets.
