Four Lakeland CSD students receive Ryan West Memorial Scholarships

Friends of Yorktown Parks and Recreation awarded four scholarships during its sixth annual Ryan West Charity Hat Tournament at Granite Knolls Park.

The scholarships recognize students who exemplify the school spirit and character of the tournament's namesake, Ryan West, a Lakeland High School graduate. This year's recipients were Katelyn Kurney and Alyssa Conetta of Lakeland High School, and Phillip Valis and Logan Helfrich of Walter Panas High School.

Following the scholarship presentation, residents, scholarship recipients, Ryan West's classmates and members of Friends of Yorktown Parks and Recreation participated in the Ultimate Frisbee tournament.

Organizers thanked event sponsors and supporters, including Yorktown Parks and Recreation, Yorktown News, Yorktown Small Business Association, Giordano Industrial, Mountain Top Hockey, River Towns Media LLC, Mari Oshiro, Courtney Kamna, Copperhead Club, Mark and Michelle Campione, and Jim Martorano.

The organization also announced the appointment of John Kurian to its board of directors. A Yorktown resident and Yorktown High School graduate, Kurian brings a background in community outreach, sports and recreation, including Ultimate Frisbee.
