Evelyn M. Ficara

After a long and full life, Evelyn Ficara, known to many as “Nanny,” passed away on March 5th 2026 at the age of 95, probably while arguing with the angels. Evelyn was gentle, petite, yet undeniably mighty. She was a strong woman who was as stubborn as she was loving. She dedicated her life to the continued growth of her family. She was loved by all and will be greatly missed. Evelyn is survived by her 4 children. She was cared for in her final years and always by her daughters, Terri (the late Ed) and Pattie (Charlie). She is also survived by her grandchildren Michelle (Phil), Kendra (Stephen), Ed (Stacey), Jessica, Anthony, Melissa, Jennifer and Christopher, and great grandchildren, Timothy, Tyler, Kayden, Eddie, Dylan, Kylie, Landon, Giovanni, Madisyn, Michael and Jillian

Evelyn was born and raised in the Bronx. She was the middle child and only sister to her four brothers. This is probably where her love for baseball, specifically the Yankees, came from. As a young woman, Evelyn graduated from the trade school Needlepoint and was a talented dressmaker. She designed and sewed all her dresses. It wasn’t long after that she met and married her husband, Joe. They resided in the Bronx in a 3-bedroom apartment with six children, until they moved their family to Westchester, NY. This is where Evelyn met so many friends that became family. Her and her oldest daughter, Terri, were always together, you never saw Terri without Evelyn. They were always getting into some kind of shenanigans with their friends Roe, Mary, Albie, and Miriam.

Evelyn was a woman who didn’t need many hobbies to fill her time. Instead, she found her true calling and her greatest joy in watching her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to her own grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Evelyn had an open home where countless little ones found a loving place to stay while their parents were at work. All the children knew her as Nanny. She was a constant presence in their lives. She was a devoted caretaker and storyteller. In fact, she had a knack for making a SHORT story LONG. Whether she was watching the kids play or simply sharing a laugh, she taught us that the most important things in life aren’t things at all-they are the moments we share with the people we love.

Known to most as Nanny, she was a woman who knew exactly what she wanted, how she wanted it, and when she wanted it. In her later years, Nanny moved to Yorktown Assisted Living, where she became a legend among the staff. She certainly gave the nurses and caregivers a run for their money, keeping them on their toes while she was always trying to show them she could still touch hers. It is here that she met one last beautiful friend, Norma. Her and Norma quickly became the best of friends and kept an eye on each other. While her loss is felt by many, Evelyn “Nanny” leaves us with a lifetime of fond memories, countless laughs, and all the love she shared over her 95 years on this Earth.

Evelyn is predeceased by her parents, Irene & Vincent, her brothers Vincent, Georgie, Eddie & Donald, her son Christopher (also born on her birthday) and her son in law Ed, who I am sure had her coffee and cookies ready for her.
