Cortlandt 6, Monroe Woodbury 2
Monday, Jan. 12, Ice Time Sports Complex, Newburgh
Cortlandt made a long road trip pay off, coming away from a trip to Monroe Woodbury with a 6-2 victory for its second consecutive win.
“It was an early game and everyone came straight from school together so that was a great way to get prepared mentally for it as a team,” said Cortlandt goalie Brandon Di Benedetto, who registered 13 saves. “We practiced and had a set game plan that we stuck to very well and just executed on the little things, keeping the game in our control.”
The game ended after the second period due to a Crusaders' goalie injury.
By then, the Rebels had the contest well in hand after jumping out to a 3-0 first period lead. Sean Foley (3G) opened the scoring with an unassisted goal with 12:37 remaining in the opening period. Aidan Rau doubled the Cortlandt’s advantage at the 6:58 mark, courtesy of assists from Hudson Tarkington (2G, 1A) and Matthew Lennox (2A). Then, with just 28 seconds remaining in the period, Tarkington made it 3-0 on a power-play goal, off assists from Aidan Dzubak and Lennox.
“Our defense played strong, keeping the game on their half of the ice for most of the period,” Di Benedetto said. “Our forwards passed well and communicated, helping us put in a few early, shifting most of the momentum of the game to us.”
Foley made it 4-0 when he scored 52 seconds into the second period, with the assist coming from Christian Waugh. Tarkington and Foley each followed with unassisted goals, extending the Rebels’ advantage to 6-0 and they held on from there.
Cortlandt’s next game will be against Pearl River at 4 p.m., Friday, Jan. 23, at the Brewster Ice Arena.
The Rebels will be looking to sweep the season series against the Pirates after winning the first meeting between the teams, 7-2, at Bear Mountain Ice Rink on Dec. 16.
“It (the win on Dec. 16) definitely gives me and the rest of the team lots of confidence going into it,” Di Benedetto said. “Even though we beat them last time we can’t focus on that and get overconfident, if we keep the game simple and keep playing the way we know how to we are definitely more than capable of starting a three-game streak with a win on Friday.”
