Cooling centers open in Yorktown

YORKTOWN, N.Y. —High heat index values are expected over the next several days, with hot temperatures and high humidity increasing the risk of heat-related illness.

The Town of Yorktown said seniors and people with chronic health or mental health conditions are at increased risk during the heat. Homes without air conditioning can often be hotter than the outdoor temperature, officials said. Residents are encouraged to use air conditioning to stay cool, and cooling centers are available for those without it. Officials also urge residents to check on vulnerable friends, family members and neighbors.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded, or air-conditioned areas. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool, shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, and 911 should be called immediately.

Those without air conditioning are encouraged to visit one of Yorktown’s cooling centers. The town announced on Monday that the following are open:
